Problem SH6

Hi!
I just bought an Edwards Les Paul with SH6 pickups. It´s very noisy, so I took an ohm-meter and when checking the resistance between the polepieces and current on the telejack, I get 13k on all polepieces except the g-string polepieces. They have no connection at all as it seems... Is it supposed to be that way??? It is the same on BOTH pickups btw...

welcome to the forum!!

how is it noisy? a constant background hum? does it go away when you touch any metal parts of the guitar or the jack?

not sure what a sh6 should read in the guitar. dc resistance readings should be done with the wires unsoldered. if you are getting good output from the guitar then it most likely is a bad ground

Yes, there is a constant hum. It´s a little bit better when touching strings/bridge etc. but it´s not like it should be...
No matter which way the pupswitch is aimed, it hums like h*ll.

I have 16K between current and ground at the telejack, and I´ve been told that´s how it should be with the SH6 pup:s.

I have e-mailed Seymour Duncans Customer Service, and they are very helpful, so I hope this problem will be solved in a short while.
I will re-solder every ground, and see how it turns out.

The polepieces aren´t part of the electrical circuit, but are only grounded. Any measurement you take from there is irrelevant to the function of the pickup (when properly connected).

To measure the pickups for continuity, you need to unsolder the leads (from the electronics) and measure between the black and green wires of the same pickup. A duncan distortion Bridge should read in teh high 16k range, the Neck (if it´s also a distortion) should read in the High 12k range (interestingly enough the value measurement you got).

@noise: is the electronics cavity shielded in any way? Are the pickups covered and if so, are the covers soldered to the baseplate properly and the leads properly grounded in the cavity? Is there a string ground in place?

The neck pup is also a Distortion, yes.

I don´t have the guitar in front of me right now (I´m at work) so I can´t look at it, but I don´t think I´ve seen any kind of sheilding in the cavitys...

No covers on the pickups.

I think the string ground is in place, the cable is not loose when pulling it a bit...

Hello!
There is shielding only on the cover for the cavity on the backside of the guitar.

I have now resoldered every soldering in the cavity, and there is no change.
But I just discovered one thing; When my engagement (?) ring on my left hand touches the strings (or any metalpart...) the noise is completly gone. Much quieter than when touching metal with my bare skin.
How come??

Now it is much better!

I grounded the shielding on the routing covers on the backside. :banana:
