Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

This sounds unbelievable.

I have used the 2i4 interface for a couple of years and am relatively satisfied with it. However, I just noticed something that is either very new or that I never noticed before.

The line/mic combo inputs have almost no grip on a regular 1/4" TS Mono Guitar Plug.

Normally, I am recording either vocals or a mic'd amp so my inputs are predominantly XLR.

However, when I record acoustic/electric guitar I usually run the guitar straight into one channel and mic the guitar into the other channel ... so I have used the 1/4" TS function of the combo jacks (successfully) in the past.

Also, and this is how I noticed the problem last night, when I am sitting at my desk trying to learn a song off YouTube or whatever I plug my guitar straight into the interface.

Right now I can barely make a connection between the guitar cord male and either input jack on the Scarlett. Both are very loose. I have tried several different cables/TS males because I know even slight differences in the diameter can make a difference, but none fit snugly or had any sort of snap action.

The strange part is that this would be understandable if I plugged and unplugged the jacks a thousand time and cycled through their expected life, but that's not the case. I seldom use them, and a year or two ago they were fine and now they are not.

How is this possible? Has anyone else experienced this? I understand that the combo jack is actually XLR plus TRS, but again, they used to work fine with regular guitar cables and now they don't.

Any ideas/input?

This really burns me up. I have a Peterson tuner I've retired because of it's BS no-grip proprietary inputs.

The Focustrite specifications include this feature statement for the Scarlett 2i4:

"2 line/mic/instrument combination inputs - high quality XLR/ ¼ “ TRS Jack Combo"

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

Sounds like the combo input worn out before the end of its life cycle. Sorry to hear that bro'. As far as I know, all 2i4 units I've seen used Neutrik combo connectors that are virtually impossible to destroy but rarely (1 out of 200) some just give up. With some soldering, they should be relatively easy to replace.

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

Are you sure it's snapping in all the way. I say this because I had an M-Audio interface once that I thought the 1/4 was all the way in, but it wasn't. Had to push quite hard to get it to snap in that last bit.

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

What brand of cable and jack plug are you using? Have you changed brand recently? Has anyone other than you used the 2i4 in recent months?

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

I have one of these at work. Have never used the 1/4" inputs. Will check tomorrow to see how they hold.

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

The 1/4" jacks used to work fine. The compression fit could be felt and heard.

I am full inserting the 1/4" TS males.

I tried several different cords made up with plugs from different manufacturers. All were so loose I had to wiggle them to make signal connection.

I live alone. No one else uses my stuff (insert seckzual joke here).

I contacted the manufacturer and there was a form to fill out which I have not yet completed. I can only hope they have identified a production run that included defective jacks.

I started five sentences with "I".

Yep. definitely something wrong. I just tested mine and both of them are tighter than a virgin's honeypot.

Re: Problem with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

Combi jacks have a small spring inside them. Though I have never seen one go bad, it is theoretically possible...
