Problem with mag swap

I swapped the A2 magnets from my pearly gates for A8 magnets. Seems it worked as expected with the neck pickup but the bridge pickup sounds weak. I followed the directions in a link here and the only thing I can imagine is that I might have loosened the 4 screws on the back too much so that the wires were loosened when I gently pulled the bobbins up from the metal frame. Seems the wires at one end looked looser on the bridge pickup. But the magnet seems to be in properly. When I lay another magnet on top of it with south to the screws it is attracted to the pickup in stead of repelled.
Could anyone advise me as to what would be the next correct thing to do?

Re: Problem with mag swap

If you're certain of the polarity of the magnet you're laying on top of it, then the magnet you put in it is backwards. Take it out and turn it over/around, because opposites attract, and the South pole should be on the screws of the bridge pickup.

Also check and make sure both coils are on when the pickup is selected by tapping the rods/screws with a small screwdriver. If you heard loud noise, they work. If only on one, then you may have separated the internal coil joins.

Re: Problem with mag swap

BTW its not a good idea to put a A8 in a neck pup.

Yeah it goes against tradition. I mean, who wants a high-powered pickup in the neck? Certainly no one I've ever heard of, now stop trying to blaze trails and break new ground. That sort of behavior is unheard of and will not be tolerated.

Re: Problem with mag swap

It is possible that an electrical connection inside the pickup has been severed, effectively shorting out one of the coils.

Just severing a connection wouldn't short a coil; it would be more like opening it. Pickup still doesn't work, though.

I did it just for a laugh with a 59N. Even this mid scooped pup sound sounded like a muddy mess - more like a overblown trombone thru a Fuzz

Re: Problem with mag swap

Well, wouldn't you know I'd hear about not putting A8s in the neck after apparrently ruining the bridge pup. I very gently treated this pickup. DIdn't notice any problem with the screw driver pushing on the wires but since it didn't work I very gently manipulated the wires at one end of the pup and noticed that they are mostly taped and seem to be spliced but there is one black wire that is just folded over and taped but it isn't connected to any other wire and there is no bare wire at the end of it. Just black insulated 22gauge taped. Does that ring a bell for anyone? I tried turning over the magnet but that doesn;t seem to help at all.
When I took the magnet out I held the replacement to the end that I had pushed out and it was attracted to it. So the other end which was going to replace that end would have repelled. That was how I understood to check for correct polarity. And it seems to have worked for the neck pickup.
I don't want to play with the wires on the pickup that is working but it doesn't seem that there should be a wire that doesnt connect to anything.
Help please?

NOT GOOD! If you are seeing a black wire that is not connected at the one end to anything thats where your problem is. Sounds like you pulled one of the wires out of the coil:smack: I think you are outta luck bro!

Re: Problem with mag swap

Well, fortunately. On the other coil was a black wire with enough length to solder to the black wire and viola...it's really loud. I don't know about the A8 in the neck. It sounds very loud but the bass is overpowering the mids and treble. This is the unpolished A8 and it seems to tame the treble too much. I think I might try an A5 in the neck or go back to A2. I miss the pearly gates neck sound. But the bridge pickup is working now . Thanks for your help.
