Problem with my bridge pickup?

Hi
I've seen on most guitar sites that the pickups should be about 2 to 3mm from the strings. If I have the bridge pickup this close it makes the clean channel on my amp sound a bit crunchy. I know its not the amp because it only happens to this guitar. It is an Ibanez RGT42FM. When I move the pickup further away from the strings, about 5mm, the clean channel sounds clear but I lose volume.
Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know what else could be causing the problem and how to fix it?

Thanks

Re: Problem with my bridge pickup?

Well, if you move the pcikup further away, the signal gets lower. That is normal.

There is absolutely no rule as to how far a pickup "should" be to the strings. Different combinations of guitars pickups and amps will require different distances.

Use your ears. If it sounds good it IS good.

MANY famous guitar players prefer the pickups further from the strings. It's all taste. Experiment. You'll find the sweet spot your YOUR rig. And that is all that matters.
