Problem with new 59n

Hi folks,

I just installed a 59n new out of the box into my LP and there's a problem. When I switch to that pup, I get a real weak, out of phasey kind of sound and there's noticeable 60-cycle hum. It's two conductor, hot to vol. tab and braided shield to back of pot, exactly like the previous pup was wired. If I tap on the slug and screws with a metal object, I hear a sound loud and clear. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Re: Problem with new 59n

If either coil had failed, you would have no signal. Check that the magnet attracts steel. Check that the grounding solder joint is not dry/cold.

Re: Problem with new 59n

also make sure there is nothing in contact with the wires

Re: Problem with new 59n

Definitely double check all the wiring. And run a multimeter to help confirm.

Re: Problem with new 59n

aren't those the kind of symptoms that you'd get if the coils were attached the wrong way round internally? i'm sure i've seen some mention on the boards before about occasional quality control fails leading to the odd humbucker coming through like this.

Re: Problem with new 59n

It does sound like the description of something being out of phase - so that could be a possibility. Let's see what real59er comes back with, once they've confirmed the soldering is good.
