Problems With Super Reverb -- Sound Clip Included

Hi All!

Been a while since I've been on here. Y'all miss me?

So I'm having a problem with my SRRI, and I'm hoping someone here has some ideas (I'm looking at you, Christian). I've had a guy replace all the tubes with a brand new set of JJs, but now the Vibrato channel is acting strangely. Here's a clip of what's happening:

Any ideas?

It could well be V5 even tho you have a new set of toobs. New tubes can be crap right out of the box. Take the cover off the preamp tubes and make sure the room is quite dark. DO what you did in the video and watch the preamp tubes while you play. Ill bet you see one of them popping and glowing. Try swapping them with others. At best, it is just some dirt in the socket, give it a clean with contact spray and insert and pull out the tube a couple times. If its not just dirt, and a new tube fixes it, then bingo!
Oh yeh...you dont need V1, so pull it out and use that to replace V5....
The fenderguru page tells you which tube slot is doing what.

Thank you kindly! The guy who swapped out the tubes said he tried it with multiple tubes (multiple sets of tubes, perhaps?), all with the same results.

Re: Problems With Super Reverb -- Sound Clip Included

worth doing yourself tho just to be sure.
You amp tech cant be all that good can he? The amp still isn't working properly!
If swap out dont help, then its could well be something inside. Open the amp up and (after you drain the filter caps!) have a close look in there. Its pretty easy to spot a burned out resistor etc.
Im sure glassman has come across the problem you are experiencing tho...ill bet 50 bucks he can tell you exactly what the problem is.

Re: Problems With Super Reverb -- Sound Clip Included

I don't trust my own amp-tweaking abilities to open this up myself. I'm hoping someone on here (like Jeremy, Scott, Glassman or Christian) would be able to tell just by listening to that clip what the cause is. Maybe it's an easy fix.

The guy who swapped out these tubes for me doesn't have heavy amp-tech experience, but he knows enough to know how to swap out and re-bias the tubes, which is a leg up on my own experience. However, with some insight from guys on this board, I'm hopeful he'll be able to perform the necessary diagnoses and remedies. I've forwarded him a link to this thread, so hopefully he'll chime in as well.

Re: Problems With Super Reverb -- Sound Clip Included

I'd suspect a C17 failure; have him probe the reverb control for DC voltage. There should be none. He may have to feed it a signal to provoke the DC leakage..."self healing" capacitors can be a PITA in cases like these.

Re: Problems With Super Reverb -- Sound Clip Included

Here's a response from the amp tech regarding the C17 failure possibility:

"Tell them I said I'd try that. I also saw commenters claim it was probably the reverb tube and that even new tubes are dead sometimes. You can mention they were 'known working tubes' as in I tried them in other amps and it was perfect."

BTW, Christian, I tried replying to your PM, but your mailbox is full. Popular guy! :)

Do you live near Mansfield? If you have trouble getting it repaired you may want to call Cranky's amp repair right off 95 on rte 140 across the street from Shaws. Wow, those are New England directions if I've ever seen them!
