ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

I've got a couple. It's a pretty integral component in several of my favorite sounds. Rides the line demarcating a distortion pedal from a fuzz.

Fun box. Tried one in a store and bought a You Dirty Rat instead though. More sustain and clipping.
IMO, you can't go wrong with a RAT.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

Thanks for the input! I went to a concert a while ago and loved the tone of the guitarist. Talked to him afterwards and he showed me his gear. His rig was pretty simple, a Parker Fly through a Rat into an old Fender Silverface. So I've wanted one ever since that concert.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

I could swear that George Lynch himself must have used RATs on stage in some concerts, judging by the tone.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

This is definitely RAT, though

That was my second dirt pedal.... it was a lot of fun. Loved it back then, wouldn't use it today, lots of more gain stuff since then.
They seem to cost a lot more these days then back then .... should have held onto them ha ha.

Really? I got mine for about 110 bucks plus tax.

TBH, I don't think the LM308 makes THAT much of a difference. It has a bit more bass and is smoother, yes, but fiddling with the filter knob does that as well.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

I agree. I own both. Solo, and at bedroom cork sniffer levels, there's a small difference at the same settings. In a mix, you'd never be able to pick them out.

I can tell you right now that the best Rat is whatever random Rat 2 you take home from the store, although I also have a soft spot for the Turbo Rat. Anyway it's super versatile, puts across lows fairly well, no significant mid hump or scoop. Tons of gain and volume boost if you need it. What's not to like?

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

So my Rat2 came in yesterday and all I can say is awesome! It goes from light crunch to all out gain and sounds amazing at all levels.

I guess the main thing I love about this pedal is something I've struggled with the Mad Professor Golden Cello & "1" and Tube Screamer–with those pedals the chords are super powerful but playing an individual note is weak. I didn't have the problem with my Metal Muff so it can't be a setup problem with the guitar.

Just curious, does anyone else have this same thing? I had another thread on the Golden Cello where I didn't like it–I've come to really appreciate it for rhythm/chords but not for individual notes.

Anywho, very pleased with the Rat2.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

Glad you liked it. I may have my already modified RAT modified back to whiteface specs, too... But time will tell.

Thanks! What I love about it is I don't lose power when I go from playing chords to a solo. The gain sound is awesome–overall very pleased.

Re: ProCo Rat 2 - Thoughts?

They're pretty much THE classic distortion pedal. They're honestly on my list of 'pedals everyone should own at some point'. They've appeared in just about every genre you can think of, from blues, funk, soul, hair metal, jazz (Scofield, even modern players like Kurt Rosenwinkel) and really are just.. the standard of what distortion pedals can do.

It's stupidly versatile, you can use it as a heavier fuzzier sound (David Gilmour used them on a few tours for songs where he needed just a little less than his big muff) and can also be used as a blurry/fuzzy grit boost, with the gain all the way down and volume up. The biggest weakness might be the filter control, whihc is a little awkward to use and doesn't have a huge useable range.

It's a real, solid, classic pedal. Even if it doesn't last on your pedalboard, you're best off trying it out for at least a few months.
