Proco Rats

So I'm very intrested in these as they seem to very unique pedals...

I looked at their website and there is one pedal called the Deucetone, it looks like it's most of their pedals combined into one...What do you guys think of this?

What exactly is the 'RAT sound'?

What's the difference with the Vintage/Turbo/Dirty Rats?

Thanks guys...

Re: Proco Rats

The Rat differences are described pretty well on their site...be warned that Pro Co has changed the chip in recent years and IMO the older ones do sound a bit different...I won't say better just different.

The Rat sound is a distortion/fuzz mix...thats about the best way I can describe it...

Billy Gibbons used a rat a lot in the 70's and 80's, Jeff Beck used one for many many years all the time Dave Grohl uses them alot as well, the 1st Foo Fighters record is full of Rat tones as well as Turbo Rat tones, Buzz Osbourn has always used a Rat...those are just some examples.

FWIW, I have 2 Rats right now and have opwned several of them (close to a dozen) and I love them...there is ALWAYS a Rat on my pedal board or in the back of my amp!

Re: Proco Rats

So i guess it'd be better chance of getting it used, how can I identify one with an old chip?

So do you know if the Deucetone is like a combo of the 3 rats they have now?

Re: Proco Rats

The Ducetone is 2 Rats in one box but each rat is switchable between 3 different modes...one of the Rats in the Ducetone switches between Vintage, Turbo and Dirty rat while the other Rat in the Ducetone switches between Turbo, Vintage and clean...

As for the chip question, the older Rats used an LM 308 chip...the later ones use a different chip...if you take the battery door off you an look right diown on the PCB on most models and the chip is in plain sight.

Re: Proco Rats

I have recorded recently with an OLD RAT and a early 80s horizontal input JCM800 and all I can say is WOW! It's the brownest, juiciest tone ever! Add in some APH1's and you are off!

It's pretty common to see people run a dual Rat setup; one set for overdrive and one set for distortion/fuzz. I think the Deucetone is an attempt package two together for people.

If you're looking for the LM308 chip it's hit an miss buying old as the pedals more or less look identical....so you'd need to be able to open it up and look to see if it's in there. Keeley sells brand new Rats that he pre-mods and installs the old LM308 chip in.

Re: Proco Rats

Look for a used big box Ratt from the 80's...

That's the model I like best...I have a real nice one.

That's the one Robert S. recommended to me and he was right.

The tone is smooth...kind of like a Big Muff but alot more manageable.

Also, if you set it up carefully you can leave it on and lower the volume on your guitar's volume control to clean it up...Beck does that alot.

Re: Proco Rats

I have a new Rat. It's pretty good. I use it for distortion with my Blues Jr. Very crunchy. I might be looking into getting that Robert Keeley mod down though sometime in the near future.
