Production Software

So I need some more help guys.

In your opinion what would be the best free music production software? Nothing to fancy, just something a beginner can start working with.

Re: Production Software

Audacity could be a [free] place to start. Assuming it's still available of course :)

Re: Production Software

I've thought about audacity but I heard it was really weird trying to put plug ins into it. Is that true?

Re: Production Software

I've no idea to be completely honest. I've only looked at it enough to suggest it to the bands I did live recordings of if they didn't have anything already, and thinking about it, that was a few years ago now. The idea was that they could use it to mix together the individual stems, perhaps fiddle with some eq, generally keeping things basic etc. How far you can push it before you need a pucker audio interface though... Pass!

Re: Production Software

Check out Reaper. It's not free, but it costs very little and the trial is essentially unlimited, though if you like it you should purchase it.

Most audio interfaces come bundled with free software.

Re: Production Software

Zynewave Podium for zero cost aand maximum performance. Audacity doesn't support MIDI. Reaper still wants your money and so does Ardour.

Re: Production Software

Look at Tracktion 5, a very capable DAW. The new version changed the name to Waveform, so Tracktion is 100% free. I recorded tons of stuff on it.

Re: Production Software

I'm not just looking for recording though. I also need something that I can make beats on as kind of a backing track style.

Re: Production Software

Some programs (usually of higher value) come with some bundled.

When you say beats, do you mean like dance beats or drums?

With thats said, if drums you can look at MT power drum kit...I've never used it but its a VSTi and is free

Re: Production Software

Drums and the ability to do other instruments as well. No one in my group has a bass guitar at the moment so it would help if we could use a plugin to do that. I can play bass a bit but with all the other expenses we have right now are kind of stopping us from getting one.

Most virtual basses sound like ass, but there are many free VSTi's that will do this sort of thing. Ex. http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=ABPL_II&id=2505 http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=Project16_Fingered_Bass&id=2319

Re: Production Software

Once again thank you guys for all the suggestions/information.

I'm going to look more into these once I get home and see what I can put together. I am going to make tonight mainly about music instead of my normal play video games to remove the stress from work.

Re: Production Software

Hello,

this is my first post here :-) actually I did not find a "Introduce Yourself" section on this forum so I introduce myself here. I'm a guitar player and software engineer from Italy.
I'd suggest Audacity; moreover, if you want to play with harmony and progressions, Chordpulse is a great tool: it allows you to create chords sequences on the fly and build your own songs. There is a free version with some limitations, but helpful
