Pros and Cons of LED Side Markers?

I was thinking about this and came up with a list:

Advantages:

1. Looks cool (IMO)
2. Useful on a dark stage
3. Impresses friends :laugh2:

Disadvantages:

1. Expensive
2. Could harm tone...

Essentially, the advantages are mostly in aesthetics. However, the second point in the disadvantage list is very worrying.

Would installing side LED's (only on the side, not on the front) harm tone? You have to have a channel for the truss rod so you could slip the wires through there, but is there anything else involved? Are any other additional routes needed?

What's the going rate for this? I got a quote that was 550 dollars... :saeek:

Cons:

1. People will laugh hysterically at you when you whip out your LED neck guitar!
2. Guy at the guitar shop who quoted you at $550 doesn't really expect you to be serious about it.

I don't know about that, I think they're bitchin' for the right applications. Just don't take yourself too seriously when using the LED guitar.

I can't recall one time in my entire life that I've actually looked at the side markers while I was playing, and I'm older than dirt. Total waste of money and tacky as all get out IYAM.

A big con for me would be power. I hate dealing with batteries. I'm not so keen on worrying about the battery for my piezos, I really don't want to have to deal with a battery for something like fretboard markers.

As for the whole dark stage thing, how often do y'all play in a pitch dark environment? Our rehearsal space is pretty dark but I don't have a problem keeping track of my position on the fretboard. If I did, there are a lot of things I'd do (e.g., luminous dots) before having someone dismantle and route my guitar's neck. Also, I'd probably find lights on my fretboard more distracting than useful.

My $0.02, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.

Wasn't there a website that offered this done to necks or sold kits for it or something like that?

I think there was a Fender Artist series tele that had Zircon side markers that reflected light rather than emitting it... sounded like a good idea.

plus the fact having all those bright lights pointing at you on an otherwise dark stage would give me one hell of a headache ;)
