Re: PRS pick-ups

As in the originals back in the 70s?

The pups that Paul puts in the new guitars?

My Custom 24 had a Vintage Bass/HFS combo. I would like it to a Custom/59 combo. The PRS pups are pretty good (especially the vintage bass) but can sound nasal.

Hi Luke!,
Thanks for the answer.
I mean the current pickups you find in most PRS's.
If I understood well you mean that the Custom/'59 combo is what you think is the closest combination using Seymour Duncan pickups?

That's a tough one. Most 24 fret PRS guitars have the HFS/VB combo that is as Luke describes. Most 22 fret models either have Dragon II pickups (like ???) or McCarty pickups (most like the '59 model).

Re: PRS pick-ups

I really like the Dragon II's in my CU22. They're VERY well balanced with a ton of harmonic overtones. Notes sustain forever and fade into beautiful feedback.

The man to ask, has spoke!

Re: PRS pick-ups

From my experience I would say the McCarty pickups are a quite a bit more nasal than a 59 and less bassy. Honky like a BB2..but in an overly annoying way (unlike the BB2):laugh2: Great for leads but I found it lacked any kind beef (in the bridge) for chunking away. Neck I'd liken more to a Jazz...much less woofy and more articulate than a 59 but also warmer than a Jazz.

And HFS def is like a Custom...though I find the Custom a bit beefier and warmer.

If you could please give us a fair chance and tell us WHICH PRS.... PRS makes quite a few pickups, and does not load all guitars with the same ones....

I agree with Jeff onn the HFS /Custo,... they´re quite close, though I find the custom "bigger" tonally ;)

Re: PRS pick-ups

i find the Vintage bass to be very similar to the Jazz neck. i wouldn't say that the HFS sounds like a Custom... more like a tighter Tone Zone with more treble and harmonics.

Re: PRS pick-ups

I used the not-so-famous treble 7 bridge PU in my ce24 for a long time. When i swapped in a jb trembucker, the only difference i really notice was lots more string clarity and a better balance. eq-wise, they seemed pretty similar, and the jb had a tad more output

I just replaced the McCartys in my Swamp Ash Special with a Custom 5 & Jazz neck. It sounds & feels like someone took the blanket off so now I'm getting back what I put into the guitar. Harmonics & string noise is all there & it was killed with the McCartys. The neck McCarty was really dark IMO, kinda jazzy and while the bridge pickup was cooler they didn't match all that well IMO. I'd say the closest thing in the Duncan line would probably be Seth Lovers...

Re: PRS pick-ups

I would say the HFS is kinda like a JB with less treble and the Vintage Bass is like a compressed and fatter 59
