PRS single cut hollowbody 2 needs pickups

I am swapping out the pickups in my PRS hollow body and want to to go a little different route than the Gibson 57 plus's or SD 59‘s I usually play. I want to get my distortion from my amp not my pu so the guitar will be a little more versatile. I love the SD custom P90 tone if they would work I'd go that route,

So anyway I have decided to go with the Slash APro 2pm the neck and The SD site recommends using a PG or Sph11 with it in the bridge, but I'not sold.

Any opinions. Remember I want the characteristics of the custom p90 which can be clean and bright or if you hits em you get every bit of the attach and they have a wide tonal range.

Seems better to put the Slash in the bridge and the PG in the neck.

phat cats?

Only if you want to eliminate treble in the neck, and neuter the bridge; it's those darn A2's. But swap magnets in Phat Cats and they'll sound as good as any P-90's. Put a pair of A5's in the neck, and an A8/A4 in the bridge, and I think you'll be pleased. A number of guys here have done this and love it.

Do you have any specifics on how to swap magnets in Phat Cats. I really like your idea!:haha:

Very easy. Take the PU out of the plastic mounting ring. The cover is held on by two solder blobs, just like on a HB. Cut those; I use a dremel, other guys use a solder gun, screwdriver, or an exacto knife.

One end of the cover lifts up easily, the other side won't come up very far, because of the ground wire. Don't force it. The two magnets are held in place by a little wax. Carefully push one mag out; you may have to use a flathead screwdriver to pry it loose, or warm the wax with a blow dryer. Just be careful not to cut any wires. Orientation: when an old mag is halfway out, hold the new mag next to it; the ends should repel and sides attract. Slide the old one all the way out and put the new one in. Same process for the other side. If you get mixed up, the two mags are seated in the PU repelling each other. Once the mags are in, press the cover back on so its snug, and resolder. Voila!

Recommended mag pairs:
Bridge - A8/A5 (full and rich), A8/A4 (a little wamer), A4/A4 (like an A8 with less output), UOA5/UOA5 (vintage dynamics with more bite than A2's).

Neck - A5/A5 (classic P-90 sound), A5/A4 (a little warmer), & A5/A3 (bright!).

In P-90's there's 2 mags per coil; in HB's there's 1/2 mag per coil. Mag's have a much bigger effect with P-90's, and since they have two, you can mix and match them. You're only limited by your imagination.

+1 to Blueman's last post. Mag swapping is the best way to taylor a pup to your exact tonal needs.

Re: PRS single cut hollowbody 2 needs pickups

Sounds like you really want the P-90 tone. You're not going to get that from a PG or a Slash. You need a P-90. Phat Cats with a magnet change (like Blueman says, A2s really aren't the best for P-90s). Or Mean 90s from GFS...they are a great P-90 in a humbucker size (like the Phat cats) and already have A5 mags in them. They have a very good rich tone with a lot of bite (like a P-90 should) and are very inexpensive.

+1. People here really like Mean 90's, especially for the neck.

Re: PRS single cut hollowbody 2 needs pickups

you should try an invader at the bridge for that heavy distortion and SH-1 '59 for the cleans.

the basic idea is a high-output at bridge due to it's a more tight area and a vintage-output at the neck because that area is more mellow and warm.

That gives a versatile combination

Re: PRS single cut hollowbody 2 needs pickups

Ok guys I figured it out. I got a set a custom wound humbucker sized P 90's made by Pete Biltoft at Vintage Vibe guitar's. Most of his pickups come with 2 sets of interchangable magnets and you get to pick the 2 types you want. Pretty cool, its like getting 2 sets of pu's. And changing the magnets takes about z5 min top.

I bought these because of your discussion about changing mags in the phat cats and after I herd my friend play his new set of "T 90’s" tele style pu's with an awesome P 90 tone. He got alnico 5’s and ceramic magnets to change out and yesterday ordered a set of alnico 3’s for the pu's from Pete. Thats like buying 3 completely different sets of pickups you can swap out anytime. Total cost. $195!!!!!!!

I had to get a set.

That's right. A mag swap creates a new PU, and with P-90, the two magnets give you many more options than a HB. Although there are far more HB's models than P-90's, you can create a huge amount of 'new' P-90's.

Welcome to the club! :friday:
