PRS Tremonti SE Pickup Replacement

Re: PRS Tremonti SE Pickup Replacement

But hey, you aren’t necessarily asking for a lot so you have a good range to pick from.
Well now that you mention it, there are a few characteristics that I always look for. That upper midrange bite is something that very much determines if I like a guitar or pickup. The JB usually delivers, but it was honky and hollow in the Tremonti.

The Custom 5 has greatly reduced the honk and has fattened up the overall tone, but I'm still not able to get that bite in the upper mids. Honestly, as much as I love the guitar's playability, this honky nasally mids thing may cause me to part ways soon.

Oh and just for the record for future Googlers to stumble across, the Custom 8 in the Tremonti was awful. Not a good fit for my ears, not at all.

I have a PRS Akerfeldt that has a maple top and neck, and it delivers the exact tone I'm looking for. Now if I could just learn to get along with the trem and the neck profile, letting the Tremonti go would be simple.

Hmm, if the Custom 5 can't get rid of it, I am not sure what can be done- short of a parametric EQ cutting it out. I am not sure of a pickup that can dip that offending frequency down.

Re: PRS Tremonti SE Pickup Replacement

Is your Tremonti one of the older ones without a trem and a wraparound bridge? I used to have an SE Singlecut Korina that played good, but that had a thin kinda nasally tone as well. At first, I thought it was the Korina wood, but if your Tremonti sounds like that too, it might have been the bridge. I've read nothing but complaints about those bridges. It sure wasn't super high-quality, and my SE Nick Catanese is kinda light too, but it doesn't sound thin and/or nasally.

Yes, my Tremonti is pre-birds and has the non-adjustable wrap around. This is the first I've heard about bridge complaints, I will have to investigate. Though I'm not ruling the wood out, it seriously feels like balsa compared to some of my other guitars.

Funny you should mention the Catanese. I just passed one up on eBay for $250 and I'm kinda kicking myself.

Maybe a P90 would work better in the bridge? But before you do that, try an A4 in the C5 to balance out the EQ.

A friend of mine has an abnormally light LTD EC made in the same World factory as the PRS SE's. It sounds killer with some Duncan Distortions. Not saying I'm certain it's not the wood in your guitar what sounds off, but light wood can sound good too, IMO.

Love my Nick Catanese. I'm not sold on the baseball bat neck, and I definitely would prefer a flatter fretboard, but it sounds killler! These days, I play it a lot more than my Ibbies.
