Ok, first I'm gonna say I won't be posting for a while, firewall issues.

So, there's this guy I know, his friend bought a Mesa Rectifier (bored yet? lmao) He had it modified so there was a switch to switch :smack: between tubes and silicon diodes. All together, the head cost him $7000. Now, what would the point of using silicon diodes in a tube amp instead of the tubes?

Re: pssh, rich kids

We're talking about rectifier tube, not all the tubes. There are pros and cons to diode rectifier, as well as tube rectifier.

Re: pssh, rich kids

I thought a few models of Rectos came stock with a switch that would do that?

$7000 man are you sure? you could buy like 2 Ecstasy stacks with that and still have money left over for a nice dinner. I think this kids blowin' smoke up your ass.

The Dual and Triples already have that switch stock. Basically, diode rectifiers produce a tighter, less saggy tone.

P.S: Your friend is a ****ing dumbass. :)

Re: pssh, rich kids

On the technical side, in a tube rectifier, the full power of the amp is traveling through the rectifier tube, in the form of an "electron cloud". At loud peaks, this "cloud" can become depleted, and will "sag". This slight loss of power contributes to the overall sound charateristics of the amp.

It is, to the power supply, what "clipping" is, to the output signal.

Solid state diodes don't exhibit this sag, and thus, affect the sound. Someone else will have to describe what it sounds like, but thats whats happening internally. ;)

Mesa Dual and triple rectifiers have this switch (to switch from a Tube rectifier to a Solid State one) from the factory, as does the Roadking and IIRC the Stiletto

And I´m sorry, but 7000$?? Even 7000 SWISS FRANCS (worth abour 50 US Cents each) I wouldn´t believe without seeing the bill. I think he´s BSing you ;)

7000 is 2 Bogner/ Soldano /VHT or similar Fullstacks, why on earth anybody in his right mind (or even without a mind) would spend that much on a RectumFryer is beyond me ;)

Solid state Rectifiers sound "harder", more defined, less "spongy" and a hint more aggressive than mopst tube rectifiers (BTW, we mean the rectifier CIRCUIT, i.e. the part of your amp that changes the AC wall output to a DC current that the tubes can "use" ;). Not the rectifier amp )

BS. It's been said, stock on the Dual and Triple. But you could do SO much more just grabbing a Road King. And even then...less than half that price. What bullsh it and what an idiot.

$5700 US... I keep forgetting the currency conversion

Thats STILL too much. Duals and triples cost around 1600-1700 brand new.

Your friend is full of sh!t, mayne. Like people have said (confirming my rusty memory) that comes stock on Duals and Triples.

BTW this kid is OBVIOUSLY a spoilt brat as he has no idea what features his gear has, what it's capable of, OR how much it costs because Mommy and Daddy Warbucks pay for all his crap. Then he goes running off at the mouth. This kind of ignorance is common among kids like that.

They're $2400 US new here. the SINGLE Rectifiers I mean.

Ok, so I guess I was bull****ted, but still. lol.

Re: pssh, rich kids

ya thats kind of over exaggerated man, i live in canda and a recto only goes for like 2 grand max in canadian no where near 7000!
