PU combo for versatility

spratocaster

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and had a quick question. I have an ESP LTD ES-301 that plays awesome but has a truly awful set of pickups. I am looking to replace them but wonder what pickup combination will give me the most versatility? I play a lot of blues, rock, classic rock, and jazz along with a smattering of other styles (thus the need for versatility). The guitar is solid mahogany neck through with rosewood fretboard. Ideally I would like a good clean tone for jazz lead and cleaner rythm work along with a good overdrive crunch tome for rock rythm and blues lead. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Forum

I'm not familiar with that particular guitar. Could you give me some specs (body wood, neck wood, HSS or HH or HSH or SSS?

Re: PU combo for versatility

It is sort of like a Gibson SG but a faster neck. It is a neck through design with a mahogany body and neck and rosewood fretboard. Its pickup configuration is HH.

Heh, i put an EMG-60neck/89bridge in my warlock.

As versitile as a strat. (Get some coil spilting action!)

Re: PU combo for versatility

you might try the Jazz/Custom 5 combo, or if you like a little more kick in the bridge position, the Duncan Custom. If your guitar isn't too naturally bright, you could also try a JB in the bridge. Either way, I would go with the Jazz for the neck. I have one in my SG and I love it!
