I'm nuts. Completely off my rocker.

A friend that fixes up old echoplex and spaceecho tape machines in SoCal is going to pick it up for me and refurb it. Looking forward to getting my hands on it when he's done.

The guy in SoCal I have working on it is an expert and this is his full time gig. I am feeling pretty good about it.

I've really been thinking about getting one too lately, but I just don't know enough yet to trust my buying decision (condition, repair, etc.) I half consider the Fulltone and T-Rex ones since at least they are new.

I have met a guy out in LA named Pete Grosso. He goes by Pete Echoplex on TGP and instagram. On Reverb, I think he's The Gas Station. He does complete tear downs and rebuilds. I have spent many hours on the phone with him in the last few days. Admittedly he was putting up with some Dr stuff on Thursday and I was on a 10 hour drive home. He ended up sending me a ton of photos of various models with pros and cons, specifically steering me clear of anything post 1973. Just a wealth of info.

Basically find your unit, get a picture of the motor and send to Pete. It'll run about 400-500 bucks for him to rebuild the entire thing and load up some NOS tape.

I texted him last night on something and he called me at midnight my time, 10pm his and we talked another hour. I'm buying the unit from a small shop in LA and he's picking it up for me and refurbing it. I will be happy to introduce you at some point.

sweet! never played a 2 before but the 3 is great, can only imaging how good it will sound all tuned up

cool

- does the tape have a lifespan? I would imagine you could only record with it so many times
- do you have to demagnetize it like a tape deck? (I'd figure)
- can you find new tape for them?
- is old tape hard to come by?

Stuff like that runs a fine line between awesome and falling apart. Looks good so far, and looks like you have the right doctor for it. We will of course need a sound clip of some sort….
