Pup cavity

Well, the P-90 in has real nice cleans but the distortion is just so staticy and what not. Maybe because its not a SD P-90 its just an Epiphone one. I want to stick a JB in there but the cavity is to small, I don't think it needs alot of expansion just like a 2 mm. How would I go about doing this, sand paper? I don't want to pay a tech because it will be expensive and it doesn't seem to hard.
Thanks for feedback in advanced.

Re: Pup cavity

What kind of guitar is it? I'd be really careful if it's a Les Paul style guitar, nothing will detract from the looks more than pickup cavities that look like they were cut with a butter knife. One other thing to keep in mind, P90's sometimes mount differently than humbuckers. You may need to drill mounting holes for a humbucker.

Have you looked into P90 sized humbuckers? There are several companies who make these.

Re: Pup cavity

I was looking at my guitar (its a Epi sg jr.) I took off the cover of the P-90 and the cavity is almost the same size as the cavity my Explorer copy has (it has humbuckers) I figured I could just sand it a little bit to let if fit.

Re: Pup cavity

P-90s are wider (pole to pole) and skinnier than humbuckers. You will need to take off just a hair from the top and bottom of the route. You may also have to make the route deeper. First I would say don't do it. If that fails, get yourself a dremel tool and grind a bit like I said. You will have to make some holes to mount the ring as well. You should consider a Duncan or a real Gibby P-90 first I think. You can get really sweet distorted tones out of a good P-90 (people ALWAYS replace stock Epi humbuckers, right?). Another though is to look at an SG-X. It is basically an SG Special with only one pickup. I have one and I love it. It is my main guitar. SG-X are very cheap on Ebay ($300-$500). To buy another SG Jr., well...that will cost you considerably more (at least $500 for a Gibson). SG Jr. are very disireable, most people do not give an SG-X the time of day. I would say buy an SG-X or trade the Jr. you have now if you cannot afford another guitar. Most people regret doing what you are considering, and most guitarist learn the beauty of the P-90. Most later than sooner. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Pup cavity

I wanted to put another P-90 but I don't know if a SD P-90 will be less noisy then the one I have now. The noise is almost overwhelming the accual stuff I play, Its terrible. Is a P-90 suposed to sound that noisy?

Re: Pup cavity

P90's are kind of noisy, I find them to be noisier than a regular single coil. I think you would like the Duncan noiseless P90 set.

Re: Pup cavity

are those the P-90 stacked? 90 bucks hehe, if I don't like it I can always just switch it and get an invader for my hamer standard. Thanks, I will try the P-90 stacked before I have to make modifications to the pup cavity.
