Pup suggestion: Basswood Charvel for Metal

I am replacing a jb jr. in my basswood floyd-equipped Charvel 275 Deluxe with a full size HB that will be angled and mounted into the wood. It has a little 59 in the neck which will stay. Since I already have a tele (JD and Twang king) and an Agile LP with 59s, I want to make this into my METAL guitar! I'm looking for a bridge pickup that is tight and articulate but still kind of raw. Capable of chugga chugga rhythms, singing (non-shrill) leads, and articulate runs on the lower strings . I don't want to go active so no EMG 81s or Blackouts. I also like to record through my Johnson J-station and actives can cause a strange digital clipping sound. I like to play everything from Iron Maiden to Killswitch Engage and some Avenged Sevenfold and EVH for my guilty pleasure dweedly dweedlies.

I think have narrowed it down to
1) Duncan Distortion
2) SH-5 Custom
3) Full size JB SH-4

I would appreciate any suggestions or subjective opinions on these or other pickups that might suit my needs.

Thanks!

A7X - Invader
Maiden - Custom
EVH - '78, CC

The first thing I thought of was a Demon though... might be worth trying.

I've gotta go with the Custom on this. Your range will need some booty me thinks. There isn't one good pup for ALL of that (except a 59!).

Might go Invader just for the "Over the topness" of it.

Over the top in basswood?

Gotta try the Dime.

It works very well for metal in my HM Strat.

i have a Charvel Fusion Deluxe. Its a H-S basswood body guitar. maple neck. rosewood fingerboard.
i played several duncans(distortion,Jb,C5, Custom Custom) and the ones that has less middles or Scooped middles didn't work (Jb,C5,Distortion)
But, the Custom Custom Worked PRETTY ****ign Well. and i play nothing less than Extreme Metal.

WFD,

A JB has scooped mids!?!? :eyecrazy: To my ears it's mids sound big and dominant.

Re: Pup suggestion: Basswood Charvel for Metal

yeah, i know!it Sounds a little bit weird.
i had a JB 3 times.
2 in 2 different ash bodied guitars and once in marupa body guitar.
It has mids, but some other frequencies jump in first and shady its mids
i dont know how to expalin.
its like, having a tongue, but not be able to speak louder enough.

You all have it all wrong. Nothing sounds better then a Dimarzio in a basswood body. I tried all kinds of Duncans in my wolfgang b4 someone here told me this and he was right. I finaly went with a Tonezone and never looked back. Dont get me wrong, Duncans are my fav pickups but Dimarzios>Duncans when it comes to Basswood guitars.

Re: Pup suggestion: Basswood Charvel for Metal

My Breed in my basswood Ibanez agrees with Richard. The JB just had a hole on it's tone, regardless it was fantastic. But the Breed filled that nicely.

I'd suggest a Dimarzio D-Sonic at the bridge, and no clue about the neck.

I have a basswood Jackson superstrat and the Fred in it is great. Really great open growl but still very tight when hitting the lower strings hard. A terrific all-around pickup, works with both high and low gain.

Yeah, it really doesn't have a lot of mids or a lot of treble. It has a lot of upper-mids. That's part of what gives it its unique tone. The other big part is the lower bass, which makes it more elastic and gives it depth.

As for what pickup to use, I'd probably try a Full Shred. Or, since it's basswood, I'd consider Dimarzio and try a D-Activator or an Evolution.

Thanks everyone! I ordered a Dimarzio D-Sonic. I'll let you know how it goes. Now I have to decide which side to put towards the bridge.
