I wanted to get some answers to some of the terms i hear thrown around about pups?
like some say it is a real open sounding pup? what does that mean?
what is a compressed sounding pup?
what does it generally mean when a pup is labled muddy?
how bout when someone says a pup is dirty sounding? i heard distortion is not generated from a pup?
Harsh what about the meaning of that one? unpleasing to the ear? trebly?

Re: pup terminology? slang terms

to me, those terms are:

open: loose low end. flowing sound. when i think of open, i think single coil.

compressed: tight sounding in general. kind of AIR-TIGHT. when i think of compressed, i think of high output humbuckers.

muddy: i don't hear about pups being muddy, but more like the guitar-amp-pup combo that is described as muddy. when i say muddy, i mean there is no clarity and definition of the notes.

dirty sounding: to me, that term means "in your face, aggressive" very raw

distortion is not generated from a pup. however, high output buckers can easily drive a 15 watt amp to "overdrive(cranking level)" on the clean channel.

harsh: unpleasant to the ear. not sounding very smooth. different from dirty sounding in that although it might sound agressive and in your face, the tone is not that "professional"(for lack of a better term) i think harsh sounding can include not just highs, but lows and mids as well. maybe an example of harsh tone could be brad delson's distorted tones on linkin park live in texas.

just my views on these terms..maybe i'll vary from person to person.

Re: pup terminology? slang terms

open to me is a pup sounds sort of... well, open. It's not focused, but the sound is everywhere. Muddy is lack of definition, and notes aren't as clear or dramatic as when there's clarity. Compressed means if the sound isn't very edgy, but it has a sort of razor-like quality on the opening of the note, and a sort of softer sound as it sustains.

Re: pup terminology? slang terms

open is very airy, very complex midrange, nice balance of highs mids and lows..... much like a vintage PAF humbucker

compressed is a high output humbucker, not as responsive as a low output pickup....almost flat sounding, but not in a bad way, just not as much variation in tone as a result of pick attack and such.....doesnt allow for YOUR feeling and expression to come through as much because the PUSHED tone and power cannot be dialed out
