PUP to brighten my sound?

I have a Gibson Explorer and while the Duncan Distortion sounds great when I play a lead the rhythm is just muddy. I was thinking about going to a JB but I thought I ask you guys first.

Would a JB brighten up my sound and clean it up like I what it. I have always used SH-6's (Duncan Distortions) and I'm thinking it may be a little too dark for what I want (I know what you're saying).

I play in a cover band and unless I'm playing the newer rock it doesn't sound right to me. The custom 5 and custom custom were also to dark. The Explorer is a large slab of mahogany so I just need something a lot brighter.

My neck pickup is a Duncan 59 and the pots and electronics are top of the line. I play through a Marshall JCM2000. My Gibby lP sound fantastic but then again it has a maple cap and less mahogany.

Any advise?

Did you change the pots? Gibson uses 300K pots, which might be why your sound is muddy. Changing to 500k pots would certainly help. If you've done that, +1 for the Custom.

+1 but, I find the DD is a bit brighter than the custom. Change your pots to 500K's if you havent yet! BTW, the Custom sounds like heaven in an Explorer! The DD should do well also granted you have 500K pots.

59B or Pearly Gates. Those both will sound great.
couldnt agree with you more brotha:beerchug:
if ur explorer has a good natural upper mid spank, get the 59, if it sounds too mellow and dark for your liking, then get a PG

Re: PUP to brighten my sound?

I love the PG, but if you're doing a lot of "chugga chugga" rythms, then I would suggest the Screamin Demon. I have one in my Hamer paired with an APH in the neck of my Hamer and it sounds great for any style of music.

i dunno man, i tried with some chugga chugga rythmns throuhg a tubescreamer cranked with smoothed tone and it was KILLER. basically i was achieving plexi chugga rythmns with a tubescreamer through a 40 watt 1x12 tube amp

I'm not knocking the PG, heck, I own 8 of them :)

The Screamin Demon is way tighter and brighter though. This makes it better for fast, heavy riffs, funk riffs, and even chicken pickin'. :burnout:
