Pups Ass Backwards????????

Guitar is a 335 clone with 2 humbuckers,2 volume 500 K Linear,2 tone 500K Audio with 22uf caps.1 varitone switch.Pups are Tokai humbuckers,NECK reads
8.22,BRIDGE reads 7.57.Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the bridge pup supposed to read higher than the neck? Also the neck pup is buried deep into the guitar because if adjusted to standard height the strings hit the pole screws.
The treble is like an icepick in you ear(super high)even with the tone turned off
the treble is so high it wears on your ears. Are these pickups installed ass backwards or just crappy pups that need to be replaced? Is there such a thing as a pup being to big for the guitar? There is no way to adjust the neck pup as to correct height.Only other way out of this mess is to chitcan the guitar.

Re: Pups Ass Backwards????????

If those reads are accurate, yeah, they are backwards. Switch 'em and all will be right with the world.

This is not necesarily correct. It will depends on what the guitar manufacturer had in mind when designing the guitar (that is if the guitar is stock). For instance the Peavey Wolfang and their HP Special guitars have a hotter neck pup relative to the bridge.

Re: Pups Ass Backwards????????

I've heard that some retailers are dumping Tokai because their recent quality is poor, in comparison to years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if they're backwards, although you probably won't notice a drastic difference if you switch them back, since the numbers aren't too far different. Another problem you might run into is that the lead on the bridge has been cut, so it's no longer long enough to reach the neck route. My advise is to buy a set of Duncans and new pots, or just sell it and buy a Gibson next time.

This only makes sense if either the neck pu is an "air" design (poles don't quite touch the magnet) or the bridge pu has an extremely strong magnet (A8, ceramic) while the neck has an Alnico 2 or 3.

Otherwise, if the manufacturer had in mind a mosquito-sounding bridge pickup that would intentionally be overwhelmed by the output of the neck pu, this is a good plan.

Noted. I actually have to correct my information regarding the pups on the HP Specials. They are both Alnico-5 with bridge at 16.4k and neck at 7.72k.

Re: Pups Ass Backwards????????

Reversed the pups,I gotta tell ya, what a difference in sound, these things are great,What ever Tokai they came out of I'd like to have the whole guitar.Even the varitone switch sounds the way it should.I guess on some guitars the pups have to be installed neck to neck and bridge to bridge,

Re: Pups Ass Backwards????????

They're probably backwards. If the neck pup had been would with a thinner wire than the bridge pickup, there would have been a more significant difference between the two readings.

EDIT: I see you've already swapped them. I'm glad you like the sound! :)
