pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

hi dudes

a friend o mine has told me this morning to put duncans or dimarzios on an ibanez prestige 7 string he bought last saturday (btw great axe for the price...1000$ i think...great neck), and he used the Tone Wizard tool from the website but he said he doesn´t think that a set for a 6 string axe would work the same than the same set for a 7 string guitar.

The TW tool show a Distortion bridge - 59 neck or Dime bridge - Distortion neck

the axe spec are: basswood body, maple/wenge neck, rosewood board, 24 frets, floyd, and 2 ibanez v7/v8 7s that sounded awfull in comparison with the quality of the axe. hard rock/metal style.

so, while the second set can´t be fitted because there is not a 7string version of the dimebucker, is the first option good enough? Which set would you recommend this guy better than the tb6-sh1...

oh, and btw, if a 7 string axe has a floyd on it, should anyone order a 7 string trembucker bridge pup?

thanks in advance dudes...

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

It's the RG1527, yes?

I'd go with a DiMarzio set - Blaze/Air Norton or Evo/PAF Pro, or mix and match those.

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

I just found out there is an X2N-7. I'm curious enough to try it and if it's like the 6 then that would be the way I'd go.

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

DiMarzo released an X2N-7 and Drop Sonic-7 this year.

yeah, its the 1527... and what about a tone zone 7 for bridge matching the air norton? its the set the japan custom 7 had (i think the 8127...this jemsite is awesome) thanks jeff

mmm the x2n for a lead player.... dunno, i don´t think this guy is liking that pup a lot, thanks anyway

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

I highly recomend the dimarzio PAF7 in the bridge position. It's too bassy in the neck position, at least it is in my epiphone. It's really great in the bridge though, it works really well for metal. At least it does for me.

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

yeah i remember i tried a paf7 set on a k7 and didn´t like the neck position... anyway my friend told me about a sound close to the ibanez jpm (the petrucci signatures)...so, again, what about the tone zone7/air norton7 set?

btw there is not a duncan suggestion?

thanks a lot for the help

I think that a duncan jazz neck would be a good match for the PAF7 bridge? The PAF7 neck overpowers the PAF7 bridge, and it's too bassy. I think both of those problems would be 'solved' in the jazz neck.

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

ok, and which bridge pup (i mean duncan, i´m chatting via msn with the guy and has told me to ask you about whole sets in any brand, but not mixing them) then to match up with the jazz neck?

btw thanks a lot, and great signature dude

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

Not really relevant to the thread, but how does the neck on this compare to a wizard II or original wizard as far as thickness goes?

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

The 7321 has a Wizard 2 and is thicker than the 1527's wizard prestige.

If you want other info check out the pickup review thread over at www.sevenstring.org :3

Re: pups for a friend's ibanez 7string axe

these are the specs from jemsite.com about the wizard 7, that is the one mounted on the rg1527

Wizard-7 Neck Measurements:

Thickness
19.0mm at fret-1
21.0mm at fret-12

Width
48mm nut
65mm at fret-24

Radius: 430mm fretboard radius (16.93")

just the same specs than the 6 string wizard necks but with a 7... which is great because you have a very playable neck instead of a baseball bat...
i have tried k7s and universes, and this one is closer to the universe, if not the same neck. the k7 feelt like a rhythm kinda axe, cause the higher frets were just difficult to reach, more like a C profile neck kinda les paul...

this axe is great, after trying it on my friend's house i´ve thought on saving money to go for it... so this thread in a future will be usefull for me too :P

BTW Jeff take a look at this axe if youre looking for a 7string axe with floyd, you will like it for sure
