Hi everyone i just picked up a new 07 left over LP Studio, Wine Red chrome hardware for $600 Yes its one of the hogged out wood ones but the price i couldnt resist, I will be playing it through my Marshall JVM EL 34"S Im wondering which pups will give me my Classic rock tone (Aerosmith Scorpions Gary Moore etc) since this thing actually sounds dark with stock 490/498 stock pups in it and i play all lead guitar, This thing dosent sound even close to my older LP Standards at all really, but the price was right and the way the wood matches is nice as well, its actually very very nicely put together, i havent found a bad spot on it, I been playing almost 30 yrs and most Gibsons i have played usually had a blem or two at least any help would be appreciated since i have been out of the Pick ups world for sometime now
Thanks in advance

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

I had similar complain from my Studio , i,ve put AIIp's and couldn't be happier, great classic rock tone ,IMO they'll suit your need.

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

What pickups are in your other Les Pauls? If you like the sound of those, they might make a good starting position.

I have 4 LPs and 2 SGs. Each axe has something different. BB1&2, BB Pros, 496R/500T, T-Tops, 490R/498T and P90s.

They all sound good to me, but I'd have to say the BB1&2 in my R0 I like the best.

For Classic Rock (as you mentioned), nothing shines better than my 1977 Custom with the T-Tops. It totally nails Thin Lizzy when played through my DSL100 1/2 stack. Looking at the pickup specs, I'm guessing the Alnico Pro II's might sound most like T-Tops, but I've never played with them, so I can't say.

Welcome to the forum!
If you have any old Gibson PAF humbuckers laying around I'm sure one of those would sound good in either position. I use a JB/Jazz set in my Studio right now, but if I was going to change anything up right now I would probably try a C-5 in the bridge and a Pearly Gate in the neck (and that's only because I have 'em both sitting on the shelf....lol). I don't thnk you could go wrong with the AP2's, either.

Thanks for the help everyone, Also sorry about being in the wrong forum ( i cant believe i did that lol ) I think im going to start out the the Alnico II Pros in the neck and the Custom in the bridge , at least to get rolling, Thanks again

MY lil bro has A2P's in his Epi LP, and they sound sooooooo much better than the stock 'stuff' !!!

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

This new Studio plays as sweet as any of my older Standards, The only bad part is it has a Dark Fat style tone to it, I am hoping to brighten it up so it sounds sweet with new Duncans though, It even resonates like crazy aswell, I think im going to pick up a AP2 Bridge pup as well after reading alot of reviews of it here

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

A2P might be too dark for your bridge tones, Scorpions, Gary Moore. I'd get a '59b or even Screamin' Demon for bridge. (don't let the name fool you, it's just a hotter brighter PAF-style)
And for that Gary Moore -like neck tone the Pearly Gates works wonderfully with rolling off a bit of the tone pot.

Ex-rythym guitarist, Gilby Clarke, for (the old and fantastic - unlike the new rubbish) GUNS N'ROSES used (back then & now) '59s and they too are great sounding imho, but wayyyy to simmilar to the A2P's imho.

I can not say they are any darker/lighter than a set of A2P's.
My brother choose between these two sets, and walked away w. the A2P's for his LP, only because of the Slash connetation - to us, it sounded sooooo similar !

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

i dont think the 59 and aph sound all that similar. they are both low output buckers kinda vintagy sounding but the 59 is brighter and cleaner in the mids than the aph

Re: pups for new 07 lp Studio

For a warm guitar, I'f go with a C5. It sounds great and can handle heavy and classic rock tones.

I like a 59n in the neck, but for a warm guitar try using a jazz bridge in the neck position. I've heard lots of good things about it and I'm thinking about trying it myself...

I tried the custom in an LP and wasn't a fan...

Yeah, the Custom works well with tone and vol (both 500 K) rolled off to 6, to compensate high end and power. That is, when playing blues or old rock'n'roll or just sth with a more vintage-y tone.
And it's sure not the best choice for blues, but for rock, metal, blues, shredding and riffing it's great.
E: And it does Gary Moore-tones very well.
