Hello!
I can't have a poll because I don't know enough yet to have a short list!
Got an Epiphone SG 400, looking for a blues rock tone, was thinking of SG originals 490-498 but am open to Duncan ideas.
thanks in advance

Re: Pups for SG

I've heard that when you look up 'blues rock tone' in the dictionary it says: See Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates.

Re: Pups for SG

I recommend a set of Duncan 59's. The 59's sound killer in a SG.

The SG is a thin bodied guitar with a long neck and has a tendency to sound a thin and twangy and lacking in bass.

The 59's have strong bass and sound perfect in an SG.

Also, the SG used by Eric Clapton in Cream, and also those SG's used by AC/DC and Black Sabbath had alnico 5 humbuckers similar to the Duncan 59. Those are some great and classic tones, reason enough to consider a set of 59's.

The 59N can have a little to much bass for my tastes in some guitars, but in an SG they are perfect.

Thanks, Lew

+1, IMO you have to ba careful with pickups for an SG...they tend to be thin, and SG's are one place I do not suggest Alnico II pickups usally.

So what do you recommend?

well...Alnico II magnet pickups tend to have more mids and less bass than Alnico 5 magnet pickups. I would go with a set of 59's or a C5/59 combo, maybe a JB/59, JB/Jazz, Jazz/59...

Im not saying that you can't or shouldn't go with alnico II pups, but I don;t think that I would...to be honest a set of 59's is a sure thing...like lew said 59's tend to be a tad too fat in a Les Paul but in an SG they would be killer.

Re: Pups for SG

I did try the Pearly Gates and 59 sound files but they both sounded so similar, as i'm not rolling in cash might well go for 59's!

I'm probably a good case in point. This week I replaced my 490r/t combo with some Seths. Although the Seth neck is a vast improvement over the 490r, that's not the case with the bridge.

In this guitar, an SG Special, the Seth sounds thin, even harsh at times, in the bridge. The problem is that the bridge humbucker sits almost a half inch closer to the bridge, compared to Les Pauls, super strats, etc. The Special has an advantage in this area over some SG models. Because it uses a pickguard instead of rings, the pickup is parallel to the body, and therefore angled to the strings, putting the bridge side poles farther from the strings, which tames some of the treble.

So, the Seth is coming out, and the 490t is going back in (besides being thicker, I miss it's slight nasal honk). I could tell that the Seth would sound killer in a guitar where the bridge pickup is further from the bridge, but to me, it doesn't work in an SG. Interestingly, the 490s are Alnico 2 pickups, but are wound hotter in the Seths. Too hot for the neck, but hot enough in the bridge to make up for the unusual positioning.

BTW: here are the resistance readings I got:

490t: 8.27
490r: 8.0

Sethb: 8.0
Sethn: 7.42

Lew's right. The '59 is a great pup for the SG. I'm using Seths right now, but will be checking out a '59b as soon as I can, to compare the two.

Re: Pups for SG

Used to have a 59/JB combo on my Guild, then I moved to a DM Paf Classic combo. Both were great for the guitar with different character. I guess the airy tone of the SG makes it great to avoid muddy tones. If I had to choose a pickup my biggest concern will be the treble. I wouldn't choose a pickup with too much treble.

Then Alnico V if you want a more agressive livelier tone and alnico II for a warmer smoother.

Re: Pups for SG

Got my 59's today and I've gotta say what a massive improvement, (Cream tones abound)! played for 4 hrs this morning loving every tonal minute, thanks for the info....
