Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Finally got some clips of what I like to call my "growing rig-of-doom" in action. Keep in mind, it's YouTube, so the audio quality could be better, but it's not horrible. Also, this was taken at a benefit gig, we were the only band without in-ear monitors (which is how the system was all set up), so vocals are kinda hit or miss, as we couldn't really hear them. Also, I'd been at the gig for about 8 hours (and 8 previous bands) before we went on, which translates to quite a few pre-gig beers, LOL, so there are some definite "ooops-es" in there.

The rig is as follows:
1984 Marshall JCM800 2204 into a 1982 Marshall 4x12 (top) with Celestion 70's and poor-man's beam blockers (looks like hell but sounds great).

1998 Marshall DSL100 w/Deluxe Voodoo Mod into both 4x12 bottom cabs (a 1982 and a 1979). Both are 260 watt (Celestion 65's).

20?? Marshall TSL60 - there for looks, and as a backup. Actually doesn't sound terrible now that it's got new tubes in it.

Below is a pic of the rig.....

Yeah, I'm the goofy #*%# standing behind it, someone snapped the pic as I was rolling cables.

Pedals:
Boss Tuner, Digitech Whammy II, Budda Wah, MXR EVH Phase 90, Duncan P/U Booster, Boss SD-1 Overdrive, Boss EQ (replaces the lows lost with the DS-1), Decimator Gate, Boss Stereo Chorus, an A+B+Y switch that's not being used.

Aww hell, I'll post a pic of these too.

I don't really use the SD-1 and P/U Booster together, it's an either or thing most of the time (I'll do it rarely for an Yngwie moment or something, LOL). The 800 & DSL are split stereo, but not side by side. The JCM's on top, DSL on bottom. I'm not sure how to describe this effect, other than ambient, or spacious. Huge, LOL!

BTW - on the videos, one of the bottoms, and the top cabs are mic'ed, both dead center of the cabinet, not on any actual speaker. This seems to give me more of the cabinet's sound, more body.

Anyhow, there are three clips, check 'em out. Enjoy!

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Man the Rythm tone on "Frankenstein" (i love that song alot) ia ultra fat! It's def. ballsy!Great clips bro!

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Wow, that was quick! LOL. Thanks for the kind words guys! According to the sound guy that night, all he did was roll off some of the low end on the DSL cab mic. Also, mic'ing right at the center of the baffle helps a lot!, as well as a good mic. That night I was using Sennheisers, I think the model ## is 308 or 608, something like that. I've since bought one for myself (fell into a great deal on it) and will get another just as soon as I can afford it.

Again, thanks for the kind reply's fellers!

Oh yeah, I've always wanted to play Frankenstein with a 3 piece band.

Heya Blues,
It's a Mexican Strat, Duncan Lil Screamin Demon in the Bridge, DiMarzio YJM in the neck and DiMarzio HS-2 in the middle.... All low output pickups.

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

The legacy edition of Johnny Winter Second Winter has a second disk of live material, mostly with Edgar Winter as well. It has both Tobacco Road and Frankenstein. Judging by your clips, I'd guess that you might like this (although JW's guitar tone isn't too great on this one).

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

I only watched the first one -- great, fat tone.

Although I really got a kick out of the stereotypical scene:

Empty dance floor, music starts, lone drunk girl enters dance floor, drunk girl persuades friend to come dance with her, big dance floor and two token drunk girls dance all alone, friend exits floor leaving only lone drunk girl for almost the entire duration of song. Lather, rinse, repeat. ;)

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Hey Gamera - yeah, but it was cool that they danced on Frankenstein, and it always helps when said "dancer" has a great butt ;) And this one certainly does!!!

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Am I the only that noticed that 1st chick that comes to the dance floor by herself and does the dirty dancing? LOL!!!

Great stuff bro! :beerchug:

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Nice thick juicy tone you got there. Especially loved Tobacco Road. Nostalgic song for me. That wall-o-marshalls sounds just like a wall-o-MFing-marshalls!!!!!! (it's the coolest wall of stuff I can think of LOL...) :bigok: :bigok: :smokin:

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Hey Dude, you sound awesome. You are like a mix of the dude from Bullet Boys and Mick Mars. Love that metal blues sound, may be someday I will write a song or two in this style. I've been told about the beam blockers on Laney forum too, I guess it does add definition. What's "poor man" model, made it yourself?

Re: Pure Marshall Balls - Clips

Honestly, I took the speakers out of that one cabinet, ran a line of duct tape horizontally across the center of each speaker hole, then put a cardboard cutout (semi circle) in the middle of each one. Doing this blocks those harsh highs from the cone of the speaker. I guess it doesn't disperse as well (or look as tidy) as the real beam blockers, but it serves my purposes. Hmmmm, BulletBoys huh? Strange, I never really listened to them much (except the song "Hard as a Rock" which I covered back in like '89). Also, I didn't know I had a Mick Mars influence, but I did use to listen to The Crue a lot, so I guess some things are inevitable, LOL. If I'm these guys' company, I reckon that's a good place to be, hahaha. Sure wish I had their bank accounts though, LOL.
