Push-on dome knobs...

I'm looking for some metal (black or chrome) push-on dome knobs with some aging or wear on them. Anyone know a place to get some?

Re: Push-on dome knobs...

I've got you if you need them to fit coarse spline (import) pots.

Both pots are push-pulls off an Ibanez with Strat knobs on them right now... I'll have to pull 'em off and take measurements when I get home.

Re: Push-on dome knobs...

It's been my experience that push-on knobs and push-pull pots are a one-shot deal. You can take off the originals once, but don't try to remove the replacements or else you'll rip out the shaft.

Set-screw knobs will work if it's a split-shaft, just line the screw up with the split.

I've done it before but not without some anxiety. I know a guy who could get it done without damaging anything, though.

I've had bad luck with that in the past. ;(

Push-on dome knobs...

There are these little brass sleeves that adapt splined shaft pots to accept set screw knobs without wonkiness or damage to the shaft. You can get them at All Parts for sure, And maybe at some other retailers. In my experience they work very well. They are also pretty affordable if I remember correctly. They do charge a lot for shipping there, so if your are going to order them you might save some money by ordering them in a batch with a bunch of other stuff.

As for getting push-on knobs off of push/pull pots, the first key is to not install the knobs in the first place if they are a tight fit. If you have no choice but to use tight knobs, you can still prevent ruining the pot upon their removal. You can do this by grabbing the shaft tightly with a hobby-sized needle-nosed pliers, or with the end of a pair of wire strippers. Alternatively, you can just slowly work the knob off by rocking it back and forth, working it up bit by bit.

Re: Push-on dome knobs...

The trick to lining up the screw with the slot is that it should be a pointed-tip - that helps immensely.

Drop the knob just over the tip and turn the screw gently. You should feel it seat in the crack, then back it out a hair and drop it down, then tighten it.

It's a bit harder if the tip is rounded or flat, but it's a similar process since the tip will rotate the shaft to align against the split if it's close, and there's enough slack in it (i.e. not on 0 or 10).
