putting cover on humbucker

thinking of putting a cover on the humbucker in my guitar. does it effect the tone any or are covers just for looks?

Re: putting cover on humbucker

If you get a nice quality cover, the tonal change will be minimal. Cheesier covers can noticeably make your high end a little mushy. Try to look for ones that are advertised as "nickel-silver" (not the plating - the base material itself). Mojo Music has some nice ones for a pretty fair price.

Re: putting cover on humbucker

Hi,
There is a great example on youtube, search "covers vs. no covers". There are many, but the best one in my opinion shows in the associated photo a guy with a beautiful Les Paul "Burst and zebra pickups. It is right to the point.
Stay away from "chrome" covers, stay with nickel like ItsaBass said.
Lots of threads in this forum also. I like the look of covers, but I agree with some of the members that the cover off seems to "open" the sound. Sorry for such a lame analogy but this is a tough one to talk turkey on. The cover does change the sound, but it is a small thing, and many folks can really hear it.
I have a basswood tele (with humbucker in the bridge) that is so bright, I felt I must remove the cover to get a little more of the slug side response to get more of the neck side of the bridge pickup (slugs) to even out the screw side. On this particular guitar I have the screw on the high E string even w/the slug and lower the bass side of the pickup lose muddiness on the bottom.
On all my guitars that have a humbucker in the neck I can't get enough high end. So on my L.Paul I have a SH-2 Jazz in the neck (Covered) with the pick up turned so the screws are closer to the bridge, w/a zebra Seth Lover (No cover) with an A5 magnet in the bridge to give it more punch. Most people think that is to much high end to use an A5 magnet but I like it better than the A2 it came with. But that is down the road.
