Putting Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90's in Epiphone Les Paul 56' Gold Top?

Hello! This is my very first time posting and using this forum. I have an epiphone les paul 56' gold top and am curious if putting the antiquity P-90's is a good decision, or if i should upgrade my guitar first.
I inherited this guitar from my uncle and it had been sitting in a hard case for god knows how long. I just put a new set of NYXL's on it, and I noticed the rosewood fretboard has a mildew or mold in the grains of the wood. I am about to pick up some nafta(?) lighter fluid to clean the fret board the next time i change strings. i was recommended by a music store to use it to get rid of the grime. Is it worth putting in $200.00 pickups in or should i just not bother? I just don't want to waste time and money.

Do you like the guitar? If it's a good sounding instrument and you like the way that it plays, then maybe. What are you trying to achieve with a pickup change?

That's a nice guitar. All it needs is a set up and Duncans.

The guitar is very special to me and I like that the antiquity p-90's have a better overall output and sustain than my stock pickups. I can't complain about my p'ups but i would love the upgrade.

It's a nice guitar to put em in. It'll end up nice.

I upgraded the P-90's on my '56 Epi LP, and am glad I did. The older an Epi is, the worse the stock PU's are likely to be. It was only in 2010 that they made an effort to start using better PU's in some models. If any guitars are crying out for better PU's Epi's are going to one of them. How much you spend on replacement PU's is up to you and your budget.

Thanks! I think i'm gonna go for it.

Welcome to the forum!

I have no doubt that is a great guitar, that you won't have to ever upgrade if you don't want to. Antiquity P-90s will certainly take the sound to a new level. If it is a special guitar, keep it, put the pickups in, and rock that thing.

Another option: I've acquired some of Duncan's other P-90's (SP90-1, SP90-2, & SP90-3). The latter two models have ceramic magnets in them, so I swapped those out with alnicos for a more authentic vintage P-90 sound. Only takes a few minutes: loosen strings, unscrew the 2 screws that hold the PU to the guitar, unscrew the two screws that hold the baseplate to the coil. There's your two magnets, laying side-by-side. They're oriented so they're repelling each other, not attracting. I verify orientation by hold one end of the new magnet next to the end of old magnet so that the ends repel and sides attract. Slide the old one out & put the new one in (they're held in place by a little wax). Handle gently so you don't break/cut any wires. Then put the screws back in the PU and tighten strings and retune.

Gibson P-90's (the world's standard) have twin A5's, as do most other brands on the market. I like to dial in my bridge & neck EQ's, so I mix and match different kinds of magnets, like A8/A4 in the bridge P-90 for more warmth and mids, and an A5/A4 in the neck P-90 that keeps the sharp high end, but adds a little more body and dials down the low end a bit (A5's have a lot of bass).

You can do a lot with P-90's.

i love the antiquity p90 wind but in some guitars i dont love the stock magnets. luckily p90s are the best pups for magnet rolling! try it out for a while with the stock magnets and if you find you want something different, we can help you move the pups in that direction
