PV6505 vs PV Ultra Plus??

Anyone that has experience with both?? can you tell me what the main tonal differences would be? I have an Ultra plus and its a pretty cool and versatile amp. I know it became the XXX.
If im not mistaken, the 5150/6505s have more gain. But are they alot diff?? Ive always kinda wanted a 5150/6505 cuz of the thick tone..But never wanted to commit to one as I feel it may be alil limited tone wise. but, with prices falling.... But, Ive never played one within a close time frame to playing my Ultra plus to be able to compare.. There may not be that much diff. yay? nay?? whatcha say??

Re: PV6505 vs PV Ultra Plus??

I often refer to the Ultra series as having a razor blade gain/attack and the 6505 series having a serrated blade gain/attack.

The 6505 has a wider sound, whereas the Ultra is more focused.

The midrange also differs between the two.

I've owned a JSX for over a decade, and had a 6505 for 2-3 yrs. I liked the 6505, but found it dare I say....looser sounding & feeling. I found myself adding pedals to rectify that. Something I've never needed to do with my JSX.

Hard to pinpoint exact tone descriptions, my rig is likely quite different than yours which tweaks impressions. I'm really just overgeneralizing, but you get it.
I should also mention this is an EL34 and 6L6 comparison reference point.

Both amp lines are great. You really just need to spend time with the 6505 in order to see how well it fits with all the other variables in your personal rig.

I haven't got an Ultra Plus but I have a 6505+ and a Triple XXX combo.
Here is a sound clip I did with a friend's son. He's playing an ESP with a Tone Zone S at the bridge through the 6505+. I played a Hamer Californian with a Dimarzio into the Triple XXX combo. He does most of the riffing. I join him in the intro, and in the choruses which I was able to sing and play at the same time. I did the solo. We did this live so if I couldn't sing it and play at the same time, I stopped playing.
To my ear, the Triple XXX has more sizzle in the crunch channel. It sounds more like a pedal. The Triple XXX Ultra channel is great for sustainy shred and metal solos.

Not to diverge on Bloodroses thread, but I own a Peavey 6505 USA model. I've only played it a handfull of timnes, and thats what I love about it- that loose/sag sound.

My question is, and maybe Bloodrose can help, is what it a looser sounding amp, the Mesa Dual Recto or the 6505?

I've only been able to find descriptions like " the Dual Recto is a kick to the gut ", while the 6505 is a "punch to the face", or something like that I can't exactly quantify. I only wish i could play a dual recto, I've never played one.

I also owned a Recto and I'd say it was looser sounding than the 6505. I kind of miss my Recto, but I keep remembering how much more time knob turning I spent with it than playing.

Re: PV6505 vs PV Ultra Plus??

Dont have any experience with a Mesa, so cant be much help there. Sorry. Wish I could!

Kosh, thanks for the clip! Listened to a bit and sounds very good!! Im in the middle of some urgent biz of trying to find a rehab for my daughter, so Ill come back and revisit this later when I can pay enough attention to try to dissect the parts..
My impression has always been that the U/P would be more focused, probably more middy, whereas the 5150.6505 has a chewier low end.
