Q about wiring up a Crate on board tuner

When my Crate combo amp crapped out a few years ago, I removed all the parts that I thought might be useful someday and put them all in a baggy. I've been pulling them out bit by bit and using them.

I saw the on board tuner in there the other day and thought it might be fun to do something with it. It's got three wires - red, white, and black. I assume one is ground, one is power and one is the signal.

Is there a wiring color standard that would tell me which is which? Or is there a way I could find out using an ohm meter? And any ideas regarding voltage? I could probably start with 9 volts - then move up to 12 if needed.

I always thought it was a pretty decent tuner. I don't want to damage anything by just randomly hooking things up.

Thanks for any help

no markings on the circuit board?

any way you could poke around inside to see ?

maybe snap a high quality digital pic for us?

have access to a schematic from the manual?

good luck

You could probably figure out the power and ground by using a multimeter. You might need to know the power input voltage too, guessing 9v though.

This is the best I can do... it looks like it's glued inside the small case... no manual

You'd have a better chance looking at where the wires were connected to the amp. If you still hav ehte main PC, board, adn know where these 3 wires were connected, see if you can trace out where they come from. It has to be power, ground and signal. Also, you need to know what the power supply voltage was.

I agree - but the amp is currently under several feet of landfill. It's not like I'll be out a lot if I burn the thing up. I'll just try some combinations until it either works or metls.

I was just hoping to get some "cut the red wire" type advice

Thanks

Re: Q about wiring up a Crate on board tuner

I can come up with several different trains of thought as to how wire colors should be assigned. Each gives a different result.

I say follow the traces that are visible on the tuner's PC board. When they arrive at IC's, the pin #'s they land on should give you an idea of whether they are power or signal. The ground wire should be pretty obvious from the way the traces look and/or what pins they land on.

Once you know which one's what, start testing it at about 6 volts and increase the supply until it works. Meh... maybe you'd better start at 3 volts.
