Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

Would a Quarter Pounder in the neck work well with a Custom Stack in the middle and a 57/Custom hybrid in the Bridge?

I’d like to brighten up the mud in a very dark sounding Strat with an S-1 Switch. Your opinions please.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

QP is fat rather than bright, almost P90-ish in character. It has singecoil bite when you dig in, but overall it's loud and thick.

IMO for a dark sounding guitar you'd be much better off with an SSL-1 or SSL-2

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

i dont hear much p90 in the qp but lots of others say that too. it is fat and pretty dark for a single coil. i love it in the bridge but not so much in the neck. what pup is in the neck right now?

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

I've got neck and middle versions in my alder G&L Legacy. I think they're fat and slightly P90-ish, but not too dark or muddy, they've got a great single coil bite. Then again, I ordered from the Custom Shop, keep the middle one rather low in the pickguard and had it overwound by 5% so it's 14.8k, while the neck has a calibrated and degaussed magnet and is 12.8k.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

I don't think a QP even with 500k pots would be good for a naturally dark guitar. It has the power of a P90, but not the tone. Look at the Stra-Bro instead.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

A customer of mine uses Cool Rails in the neck and middle positions. They are similar to Joe Barden pickups, and have a bright, single coil tone. He pairs those with a Hotrail at the bridge.

I have a Stk-4n in there right now.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

if you have a classic stack plus neck pup right now then you need to look at something else besides pups. there are brighter/thinner pups out there but probably not a drastic enough change to get you where you want to be. do you have a tone control attached to the neck pup? if so, take it off so there is just the volume control and it will brighten things up a bit.

is it the neck pup by itself that is dark and muddy?

I didn't even know there was a neck version of the QP; I've only ever had the beefy ones.
Custom shop only?

Technically, I think there was just one version (well, there is the tapped version, also) that could be used in all positions, but I went CS for mine to get them wound slightly different and non-standard colors... glossy black for neck and glossy cream for middle.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

There's only one model of QP.

I had one in the neck of my strat, which is naturally really dark sounding, (I thought SSL-1 to be too bass heavy in the neck with 250k pots).

QP in neck had 500k pot and it was really "smoky" and dull with distortion/crunch. Didn't found much use for that, though I'm sure someone more blues guy than me might.

However, with good cleans, it did made the best "piano tone" on guitar I've personally heard.

I have the Custom Stacks, or the stack versions of the David Gilmore pickup in there right now. Not enough differentiation between the 59/Custom hybrid in the bridge, or the Custom stacks at middle and neck.

Not everything is mud, but the big disappointment was the neck pickup and pos. 4 Too dark, to undefined and nothing memorable.

I’m going to keep the Custom in the middle, probably put a JB back into the bridge, and spoke with the Custom Shop about getting a Stra-Bro 90 for the neck. (It’s tapable, so I may add a mini toggle for it.). I’m going to leave the 250k pots and S-1 switch alone. Rewiring an S-1 switch is not on my bucket list.

I heard the StraBro90 and was really impressed. Enough cut for what I use, and different enough for my tastes. Couldn’t say no.

Love to hear your thoughts when this project is complete.

Re: Quarter Pounder in the Neck?

Sounds like you've got it figured out.

Report back when you've had a chance to get used to the new set up.

ahh, custom stack neck is much different than classic stack neck. if the custom stack is too thick and muddy, the classic stack is a step in the right direction for sure. the notch tone still wont be "classic" stratty but should be better and the neck by itself should be much more pleasing.

fyi gilmour only used the ssl5/ssl1c in the bridge so the custom stack plus stks6 would have been similar to what he used in the bridge. ive heard it sound good in the neck with 500k pots but its always too dark for me with 250k

You once posted a pic of that cream one - beautiful!
