Nopes no Plexi, that is a JMP 100 watt top, with pcb inside, it is the forfather to the early JCM 800's.
They do sound good, so it is worth trying.

Rid's right...as usual.

1969 was the last year for real plexi's tho the 1970 metal-face model is basically the same amp. The transformers, voltages and output impedence vary for all Marshalls from that period from 1965-74. Up until 1973 all Marshall amps are still handwired. By 1974 they were all printed circuit board amps...no longer wired by hand.

Ken Fischer wrote a nice year by year description of vintage Marshalls and how the transformers in plexis and metalface Marshalls vary from year to year and how that affects the tone in one of Gerald Weber's amp books...can't remember whether it's in vol 1 or 2.

Guys like Yngwie, who plays the 50 watt heads, seem to all have a favorite year because each year sounds a little differant due to the differant transformer specs.

I think real Plexi's from the 60's are going for well over $2000 these days. And alot more than that in some markets...

Yeah, that was a rare 100W from the MKII Mastervolume era, which was wired as a non master volume, just to please the players who still preferred the Superlead layout. Last one I plugged into could rearrange the furniture.....SUPERLOUD!

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

About plexis read this: http://www.voodooamps.com/pleximyth.html

An older 60's plexi I think they go for 2K+..........But the problem (if any) of these amps is to get a very good even sounding plexi. Like Lewguitar said, they all vary from one another since everytime they run out of a resistor value they used one different with similar value (could be more or less) so that change the sound somewhat. One important factor was also the voltage....that made the sound inconsistance from one another....Many professional musicians have noticed the same thing they have two exact plexis even from the same year and one sounded different from the other........

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

thanks guys, the info is much apretiated, but you still did not answer my initial question. how much is the super lead worth! should i buy it and be happy for the rest of my life that i got such a steal, or dont bother with it

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

A 100 watt amp is extremely loud. We've all fantasized about playing big rock shows with our bell bottems flapping in the breeze generated by the thunderous sounds of our cranked Marshall stack. In the real world, that opportunity is rare for most of us.

I've owned a few 100 watt Marshalls. I sold them all. My '70 50 watt is even to loud!

These days, when I gig I bring two 20 watt blackface Deluxe Reverb or tweed Deluxe amps and play them in stereo.

I think you need to decide whether you will really use 100 watts...if so, and you love the way the amp sounds, then consider buying it.

But I'd get on Ebay first and see what they're selling for.

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

yea, was scrolling down thinking 'careful, those are loud beasts!'

stuff like hotplates, powerbrakes etc (or that 'pulling a pair of power tubes' trick) would bring the volume down to a more usuable level - though the tone does suffer a bit....

the only problem i have with amps on ebay is the fact you can't play what you're buying beforehand. because of the way components varied in value and quality in those days- some marshalls can sound really odd, through no fault of the seller

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

The local GC has a 50w 1973 "Plexi" in good cosmetic and perfect working condition tagged at somewhere aroud $2400-$2500. GC tends to overprice used and vintage gear a little bit though.

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

can you guys please stop it with the plexi stuff?
i was only considering it if it was WAY underpriced, so it would come off as a total steal.
i know that a 100watt tube head can be all and more power that you'll ever need. even my crate 65 and a friends roc pro 700 are too much totaly cranked up.

but it brings me again to my initial question. how much would YOU pay it. is 700$ a steal or a normal price. i need just that, nothing else!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, since you put it that way:

NO! NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WOULD I PAY $700 FOR THAT AMP! :laugh2: $400 maybe...but I wouldn't even pay that because I don't want one.

Alright alright sheeesh

I'd say 700 is a fair price for it. Those and the JCM800 types are getting trendy again and its a good idea to grab one while you still can before the price goes up. I bought my JCM800 combo for $550 on ebay about 2 years ago and a year later when I sold it the average price was around $700 for the same amp. The prices for heads seem to be hovering between $700 and $900.

Yeah I'd say its a fair price. Not a steal, but a better deal than most.

Happy now?

yes, thanks bunches

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

Those sell for $650 to $850 depending on condition and sound. Since it's becoming vintage status, I'd say $700 is a decent price, considering it's nice condition.
Still, I'd opt for a Reissue 1987 50Watter before I'd buy that one.

Re: Query: how much is a Marshall Super Lead worth these days?

Why not just make it easy on yourself and get a THD Plexi? A lot cheaper, sounds much better at lower volumes and is very even sounding, rich and consistent (something Marshalls were never).
