Question about a pickup combination.

Been toying with the idea of trying a certain combination in my LP Standard which is a Custom 5 in the bridge and an Alnico II Pro in the neck.

I seem to prefer a bridge pickup that's got a bit more of a kick to it than a low output PAF type model and I want a clear sounding neck pickup with no drone to it at all. I did try the Custom Custom in the bridge once, but found the bottom end to bit a tad too loose for my liking and overall it seemed just a bit too thick.

Offhand I would imagine 300K pots for the bridge and 500K pots for the neck would work pretty good for this combination.

Has anyone tried this particular setup in an LP Standard? Would these two pickups balance out well with each other?

Thanks.

Re: Question about a pickup combination.

Mixing pot values the way you propose is a good idea. As for the balance, it should be perfectly fine, just a matter of zeroing in on the relative pickup heights.

I had that set up in my Hamer with 3 500k pots. It worked very well for clean and dirty rythm tones, though for me, the C5 isn't the best lead pickup.

I like the C5, but with 250K's to take off a bit of the high end & bring out the mids (300K's would be fine also). That gives it a full-bodied sound.

If you didn't like the loose low end in a CC, you probably aren't going to like an A2P in the neck either, as it's they both have A2 magnets, famous for its flabby low end. A characteristic which will be more pronounced in the inherently bassy neck position, and especially in a fat, dark-bodied guitar like an LP.

For me, a good match for a C5 is a '59N or JazzN. Enough treble to have plenty of definition for both chords and solos, & a tighter low end than an A2 PU.

Re: Question about a pickup combination.

The APHn's low end is NOTHING like the CC's, even in the neck of a LP.
