Question about an 80s schecter I found!

I found this 80s schecter for $450, is it worth it? It's also hard for me to tell if it's one of the original california guitars. What do you guys think? The pick ups and bridge have obviously been replaced.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

I have no idea if that's a fair price, but I'd be mightily tempted based on the instrument itself.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

It appears to be a standard from their PT series, which is still running. It could be a California, but not likely, considering the binding. All the California original schecters I have seen were more closely based on their fender cousins. I could be wrong altogether though.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

Welcome to the forum.

Interesting find. Erm, where is the serial number?

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

Did they have PT series running in the 80s or 90s that looked just like the original ones? From what I've seen of the "genesis" and "pt" series, the headstocks are totally different, while this one looks more like the originals, apart from the tuners. Another thing that looks slightly off is the Schecter logo. I don't remember seeing any on these guitars with the logos filled in white. I thought they were always clear, but I could me mistaken.

Jessie's ghost, it does look like a great guitar! I've been looking for one like this for awhile now, but I'd like to have one of the original California ones if possible.

Funkfingers, thanks! I'm glad to be here. Again, I might be mistaken, but I believe some of the original guitars didn't come with serial numbers? I'll have to go back and confirm whether or not there's one.

I have been toying with buying with the newer version of this guitar for a while now, I really dig the gold binding on black.....

That would be somewhat unusual.

I'll have to go back and confirm whether or not there's one.

Perhaps, Schecter followed the vintage Fender Tele practice of stamping the number into the bridge/tailpiece plate? (Sadly, now absent.)

Could be....From what I understand the first few batches of these guitars were 100% custom ordered. Schecter was originally a parts shop and they began custom ordering parts, taking fender necks & stripping the logos, putting there own on, and these were the result.

I like the Jackson method of stamping it at the end of the fingerboard.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

Hey guys! Thanks for all the help thus far. I'm hoping to find out ASAP because the deadline for me to buy it is in a few hours..

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

As ever, the only real test is to go and play the thing through a familiar amplifier.

Looking at the headstock pics, the plugged machehead guide screw holes are in approximately the correct position for either aftermarket Schaller M6 or Gotoh sealed gear 'heads. If somebody tried to sell me that neck as being Fender (Japan), I would probably accept his or her word for it.

The string clamp screw holes are in approximately the correct position for a mid Eighties Fender System One series guitar. (PROBLEM - I only recall the Tele versions being offered with rosewood fingerboards.)

None of what I write matters. Let your ears and fingers be the judge.

Fair enough, Thanks FunkFingers! Too bad there's no rep system on this forum, otherwise I'd give you some. Not that it'd make a difference with my low post count haha.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

welcome to fantasy Island.... er, um, the forum! I cant help with your question much, but if its a great player then go for it. Im sure it is..
for the shape its in, $450 for an import seems lil high, but again, Ive heard they play good and Schecters are nice..
Good luck

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

In case anybody was curious, after seeing the guitar in person I confirmed that it's one of the original Schecters, but modified. For some reason there's no serial on it, though.

However, I'm now the proud owner of an "original" Pete Townshend Schecter :laugh2:

Does anybody know how much it would cost to refinish this baby? I'm not too familiar with guitar work. I'll call some local guitar shops tomorrow.

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

I wouldn't bother. Leave the guitar as is and call it a relic.

For Maximum Townshend mojo, spatter some blood on the headstock. :D

Re: Question about an 80s schecter I found!

Congrats :)

If I were you I would just either reinstall a kahler nut or fill the kahler route and put a tele bridge back on. almost anything else is more likely to devalue the guitar by a disproportionate amount, especially refinishing. Considering that people are slowly starting to actively seek out 80s schecters, that decision could cost you significant money in the future ;)
