Question about Caps

Hey...
I may have a stupid question here, but here goes....
I have a Les Paul Standard, and I have some suspect caps that may be crapping out on me. May question is this: Is there any real difference in the Caps that are in there versus say...Caps of the same value from Radio Shack? The caps in there are the stock ones that look like little orange drops and I have some Radio Shack polyester film caps of the same value laying around. Could I put those in and not notice any tonal changes?
Just curious.
Thanks in advance,
Jsyn

Re: Question about Caps

I'd get real Orange Drops.

you can get them from Lew or BlackRose on the forum.

I'm a little curious about what makes you think your cap are crapping out, though ... that's a little unusual.

Thanks for the info...Maybe one of those guys will respond to this post.

About the caps...I installed two new duncans, and I noticed that the bridge pickup was real low in volume compared to the neck. I thought that odd, so I started to look around the controls, I noticed that as I moved the bridge cap in a certain direction, the sound came back full force. Could it be the cap or the pot? Either way, I don't like the fact that I had to jiggle the cap to get the sound to come in. Any Ideas?

Re: Question about Caps

I would say you have a problem with the soldering / connections somewhere around that capacitor. You know if the value of your capacitor has changed (due to age, or whatewer reason...) it would not get better by moving it around and touching it....It would suck all the same all the time. So check solderings around, or just resolder everything again...Should take only few minutes.

PS
Most common reasons for Caps to fail:
-more then 10 yrs of age (electrolyte caps),
-overheating the cap by soldering it with too powerfull gun for longer time....

Re: Question about Caps

Thanks for all the info guys...
I will check the solder joint when I get home tonight.
I don't suppose the lug on the pot where the cap connects could be faulty, could it? Maybe I heated it up too much during the pickup swap. Those are easy to replace as well.
