question about impedance and wattage?

Hey guys, need your wisdom again.

now ages ago I did that usual thing where i post a thread about upgrading some parts in something then never doing it, lol and this time it was for my Frontman 15G amp.

what I plan to do (and it will get done as its simpleish) is to take two wires off the speaker circuit, tire in a two way switch and have an external cab socket to allow me to switch between the internal and an external speaker cab, so that way i can have a separate cabinet with a speaker of my choice in it for a better sound (as the cleans are quite nice) whilst keeping the amp as stock as possible if i need to sell it on.

what i would like to know....

the internal speaker is 8ohms, now if I have a cab with 1 x 4 ohm speaker would this mean my 15watt amp would then be putting out 30watts???

cheers,

Re: question about impedance and wattage?

In theory running at max volume your amp would be trying to work twice as hard yes.

As for a switch and all that jazz...if you're determined to do a mod like this I'd recommend simply terminating the amp's wire to a 1/4" jack secured to the amp. Wire a 1/4" plug to the internal speaker and simply unplug what you don't want to use at the time. Simple = less to go wrong.

Re: question about impedance and wattage?

if your ss amp says 8 ohms minimum, as i believe yours does, and you run it at 4 ohms you will probably fry the amp eventually. you will get more output till it cooks itself though.

This. And depending on the amps design it might make 30w at 4 ohms, or it might make 20. No way to know. Or it might just blow in the first few minutes. Unless you know for sure the amp will handle it dont do a lower load than 8.

Edit: Just did a quick google search, and it appears the chip is rated to run about 24w at 4 ohms.

ok then, so i could either build a 1 x 12 cab for it with an 8 ohm speaker or a 2x12 which has two 4 ohms wired together... that would probably sound quite cool....

cheers.
