Question about John's TS9 Mods

Those who've had them: what kind of music are you playing? How does it affect your tone? They are relatively cheap. Have any of you used his TS9's as a booster rather than a pure overdrive pedal? If so, how did it work? Can anyone compare it to Robert Keeley's mods, particularly the baked mod?

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

This may be an "apples vs. oranges" type of thing: but for what it's worth: I have a Super-Overdrive modded by SD97, and it sounds great. Definately a noticeable improvement over the stock model. I use mine mainly as a boost thru my 2204, but if I need some x-tra nuggets, I can crank the gain to do metal just fine. You'll get top-notch work from John, as well. He's also very courteous, and easy to work with. I can't suspect that you'd be disappointed with one of his mods.

Thanks for the kind words and the "plug"....
Also check out the price differences between my mods and what Keeley,Analogman etc..are charging? I do the mods for forum members and yes,the quality of work is top notch,as I treat each and every pedal as if it were my own...Contact me if I can help..

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

I have a TS9 that John modded for me as well. I use it in a 1969 Super Reverb. I have it set to go from a pretty clean sound straight out of the Amp to a good ballsy blues OD sound when I turn it on. Sort of Channel switching a Super Reverb. I also have an original RI that I was able to compare it to. The SD97 modded Ts9 has considerably more bottom, and it has more Overdrive as well. It is a really nice OD pedal. I play mostly blues, blues/rock stuff. ALA Hendrix, Clapton SRV. This pedal is the best OD pedal I have played thru my Fender. I also use a MArshall 900, and seeing that this Amp has a significant amount of OD as it is I don't feel I needed any more than what the Amp provides (I do use a original BB pedal in front of this on rare occasions). For me and what I do I can't imagine a better pedal in a Fender Amp.

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

I have two TS-9's that John modded and I like both better than my stock TS-808!

I have only compared John's DS-1 mod to Keeley's DS-1 mod, but I much prefered John's mods.

Trust me: John is as good or better (I THINK BETTER!) than anyone doing this kind of work.

He's the only one I let work on my vintage pedals and John seems to hear things the same way I do.

I give his work my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

john did a sweet variation of his usual TS9 mod on mine focusing on getting a warmer bassier sound. It works like a charm i tell you. I used it at my school's band concert, and let me tell you it's classy sounding. I just need to top it off with a deluxe reverb and i'll have my golden tone.

My favorite part of the pedal is that the range of all the knobs is expanded. Pre-modded, my TS9 had everything on 10. Now i'm running the drive at around 6, tone at 7, level at 6 and it sounds smooth as butter. I like the fact that it has that extra crunch when i need it, and it sounds natural as can be at that. You need a good tube amp to reap the full benefits of these TS9 mods...

Me too. :)

Everthing's just better with my Spina-modded TS9. Better lows(deeper, more smooth), additional gain(not grainy, butta) and just plain more organic sounding. I like it best with my Strat or Tele & '59 RI Bassman or Blues Jr. Can get lost for hours just fiddlin' around there. Oh, BTW, he's one cool dude too. :smoker:

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

I've got a DS-1 modded by John. I hate DS-1's (stock). I love my modded DS-1 by John. That's a big transformation. Usually people mod pedals they like. I went from hating the pedal to loving it. that's quite an accomplishment for John

Re: Question about John's TS9 Mods

I actually had John open up the tone of my TS-9's and make them more natural sounding and less compressed. He can figure out how to do anything and the results are extremely musical! Even when I hear SRV stomp his TS-9 into action, the tone sounds just a little artificial.

When I play a stock Tubescreamer, it's like there's this thin chrome membrane or umbrella of metallic sheen over the guitar tone that I'd like to break through.

John got rid of that for me.
