Question about MM type bass pickups

Although I know quite a bit about guitar pickups, I'm not very familiar with bass pickups. But my son wants to build a bass from a Warmoth body that has a MM pickup route. Looking at replacements for MM pickups, it appears that they are all active pickups. Was the Stingray always and only available with active electronics?

Since we're trying to keep the cost low on this project, is there a passive replacement for this pickup? (i.e. same form-factor?)

Re: Question about MM type bass pickups

EB/MM Stingrays only ever came with an active 2 or 3 band EQ. The pickups themselves are passive, just like any normal guitar/bass pickup. The EQ is the active part of the circuit. You can certainly wire a MM pickup in with just a volume and tone knob if so desired. You do not need the electronics for the pickup to work, but they play a large role in the overall Stingray sound.

Re: Question about MM type bass pickups

my suggestion if you want to stay passive is to get the duncan alnico version and use a on/on/on switch to get series/split/parallel.

ive done that on a few basses and really liked the tone

Sounds like that might be interesting. Thanks.
