Question about pole pieces

I have Quarter Pounders in my bass. I was looking at the big fat pole pieces the other night and I wondered if pole pieces need any sort of care and upkeep. Do they need polished or replaced (ever)? Do they corrode or get older in time?

I have no idea what the material properties of Alnico V are. Thanks!
