Question about shipping a guitar

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
if its in a hard shell case is it ok to just ship as-is, if you don't care about scratching up the outside of the case?
its going Fedex.
i suppose i could just cobble together a cardboard outer layer of some sort, with old boxes.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

Well, the case is not a box. Go to a local music store and ask if they have any spare boxes around.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

Absolutely not!

FedEx actually sells a guitar shipping box and you will want to pack it properly. No box means no recourse for damages even if you add insurance.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

Proper way is to add additional padding/support inside the case, then additional packing material between the case and the box.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

If it's a bolt on I would take the neck off too, wrap separately inside, then in a box.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

Shipping in the case only is just asking for the shipper to steal the guitar.

Here is what Reverb has to say.

P.S. The last guitar I revived that was just the case inside a guitar box had a piece (fortunately a small one) broken off the head stock. It could just as easily been the entire head stock.... on a guitar that cannot be replaced unless Dean agrees to open their custom shop and make me another. Spend the additional $20-$30 it takes to pack it correctly and up your shipping charge. Customers are willing to pay slightly higher shipping rates to know their guitar has the best chance of arriving undamaged. I know I do.

+1 This is how I ship guitars I sell. I like going the extra step and tuning the guitar about 2 full steps down to relieve any tension in the neck. I once received a DC Jr. that had a crack in the heel. Luckily, UPS paid the claim.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

No one has ever, in the history of shipping, complained that something was packed TOO securely.

No kidding. Getting a claim paid is never guaranteed. Ship a guitar in just the case and try getting a claim paid. OP, I do hope you don't ship in just the case.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

Just read the OP more thoroughly. Yeah, definitely don't be that guy if you're selling this on eBay or Reverb. A random box store may have a keyboard or guitar sized box you can get cheap. Or hit a guitar shop.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner.
Just remember, no matter what anyone tells you, they are not going to be there to bail you out if there is damage.
(Which is pretty much true of any advice you get from anyone about anything)
