I have one more mid priced electric guitar to upgrade.. It is a copy of Les Paul, it is Vintage V 100. on that guitar i like pretty much everything, except are some crappy tuners. so i wonder, if remove stock Wilkinson Deluxe tuners with Gibson Deluxe tuners would be worth money? i already have Gibson Deluxe Tuners pack, but i heard a lot of people replaced it with better ones like Groovers.. i need an opinion of someone who already have that Gibsons on guitar.. is it worth putting on ? also i :scratchch am interest at some good tuners for upgrade, please suggest which one to get or somethin.. thanx.

In what way are the stock Wilkinson machine heads disappointing you? It is possible that they would be fine if you wrapped your strings around the post differently.

Re: Question about some mid priced guitar upgrade

I prefer lightweight tuners, like Kluson clones, over Grovers. On Les Paul style guitars, I prefer lightweight aluminum stop tailpieces too.

I think that sounds "better". More resonant. More of an acoustic quality.

It's subtle.

If you're not subtle, you may not even notice the difference. :)

Unless the tuners are causing problems, like slipping, there's no reason to upgrade them. Put that money into PU's.

If you do change out tunes, I prefer Grover rotomatics, as they rugged, reliable, and always hold in tune.

I have been looking at those v100's, is the general quality good? I have a V6, and I love the way it sounds, and it's fairly solid, but it doesn't escape the crappy pots syndrome of cheap guitars

I think the Wilkinson tuners are quite good, if anything to redeem some of the depreciation, put some Duncans in there

Forum member, Left_Hand_Strat, has a Vintage V100 LP-alike. He has definitely made changes to the pickups. (I supplied one of them!) I cannot recall whether he did anything about the machineheads or the electronics? Contact him. Ask.

Indeed i do and indeed you did!

I left the machineheads on as I can tolerate them and they don't seem to cause any particular problem with playing or tuning stability, What I will say is, should they ever cause an issue I would go with grovers, however, these are not a direct fit so some minor surgery to the holes would be necessary. What I have noticed is that the way you wrap the strings around the tuners definitely has an impact on V100's. I will try my best to supply you with a Youtube link to the method I use, which has not caused any problems with tuning or tension.

I can probably guess that you will say the tuners feel a bit loose at times when tuning, not too loose but looser than one would normally expect. this is just how the stock wilkinson Deluxe tuners are. Save the money you would spend on machineheads for something more worthy of upgrading, like the Nut, pots or Pickups.

a Modification Idea I would suggest to you is to save up some money for a decent set of pickups of your choice, which are possibly to coil tap/split by a puch pull pot in the tone pot positions on the guitar. This will be more of an improvement to the guitar, a decent set of pickups, pots and a nut will really improve that guitar as it is, the woodwork on that guitar is very good.

EDIT: this is how I restring my V100

Thanks for replies, comments, informations... but, i actually like those wilkinson pickups a lot. it sounds to me very good.. i have had exactly the same pickups in Vintage SG, but in LP sounds whole better for my opinion.. no personal need to change them. I have completly replace SG with new electronics, push-pull pots and Seymour duncan pickups. i even replace the tuners with some Gotohs, and they have better tuning stability. i don't know but maybe i should just do a complete setup on V 100, put on some higher gauge strings.. i will research your video, maybe it's just the right setup needed to put that guitar in the best condition:scratchch anyway, thanks !

Re: Question about some mid priced guitar upgrade

Do a complete setup as you said and throw some d'addario blues jazz 11's on it they seem to be quite stable on it.
