Sandra and I do a nice version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and I'd like to put it on Soundclick. Can I do this or do I have to get permission from the publisher first? I don't want to sell it anything. I just want Soundclick to host it so I can play it for people. Thanks! Lew

Re: Question about Soundclick and copyright

I would go ahead and put it up. This makes me wonder, would you have to get permission from the original artist if you play in a cover or tribute band?

Re: Question about Soundclick and copyright

I thought the EULA @ soundclick forbid posting of covers.

Not that anyone follows it.

Re: Question about Soundclick and copyright

I don't think it is technically legal but since you are not making any money off the song it is really not a big deal. Cover bands are also technically supposed to pay a music licensing fee (though most of the time if it is a very legitimate venue, the venue actually does). There is a tiny little performance space/coffeehouse called The Space and they don't pay the fee and they ask people to only play original material during concerts and open mics.

Re: Question about Soundclick and copyright

Do it and remove that thing from the charts so that it won't be listed.

Also, I tought that there is a "cover" genre to find somewhere. @Osensei
