Question about SSL-1's

Yo everyone..new to the Duncan Forums..
I would first like to say that I'm a big fan of SD pickups..
the 59's in my v are excellent
anyways..

if i were to order 3 SSL-1's to replace the stock pickups in my MIM strat,
would i look to order a matching set of three? In other words, are there any considerations as far as hum cancelling or anything else when replacing all three pickups, or could I just throw 3 SSL-1's in the shopping cart, take them and my guitar to a shop and have them put them in?

Hello and welcome to the greatest forum on the internet!
If you get the "calibrated" set you'll have all 3 postions correct right out of the box...If you purchase the pickups seperately,just put the strongest dc resistance reading pickup at the bridge postion..You can opt for a RWRP middle pickup and this gives you hum cancellation in the 2 and 4 postions...Be sure to get your pickups from either Lew here on the forums or John at Blackrose so we can keep the business going to our forum buddies..

Hello and welcome to the SD forum,

In answer to your question, you can (and should) buy a calibrated set of SSL-1's. The set will give you two regular pickups plus one RW/RP (reverse wound/reverse polarity) pickup for the middle position. The advantage of this is that you will get hum cancellation in the "notch" positions (#2 & #4). Have fun!

most places online only sell individual pickups.

The SSL-1 is a 6.5K pickup...you can get a RW/RP middle 6.5K SSL-1 too. When you get a calibrated set the bridge pickup is 6.5K and the neck and middle are lower: around 6K I think. I've always used the stock 6.5K SSL-1 and SSL-1 RW/RP and some kind of hotter bridge pickup, like a JB JR. The Twangbanger might be cool too...or the Antiquity Custom. I like the SSL-1's with a bridge 59B or TB too. They're great pickups...deep, bright and bouncy, like a hot/vintage single coil. Lew

Go with the Ant. Custom for the bridge. It'll balance out nicely with the ssl's & is a friggin' incredible pup. Lew's the man, he'll set you up. Good luck.

So.. I need to buy two SSL-1 for neck and bridge and one SSL-1 with reverse polarity for the middle??

There is a "California 50's set", but i don´t think that is the "SSL-1's calibrated set". There is a set called "SSL-1's calibrated set" or something like that??

if you want true vintage fender setup you would use three ssl1's all the same. same polarity, same wind for all three pups like fender did through the 50's and 60's. you wont get humcancelling in the notch positions with a 5way though.

the "california 50's set" is two ssl1 and one ssl1 rw/rp for the middle. they will all be about the same wind but with the rw/rp middle pup you will get humcancelling in the 2 & 4 positions on the 5 way.

if you want a bridge pup with more output and a warmer sound then a ssl5 in the bridge is a good option
