Question about the Marshall Jubilee

First off, merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah to all. I just recently obtained a Marshall Jubilee 2558 2x12 Combo amp (standard black, not the Silver Jubilee). I actually traded a 4x12 Standard Straight Mesa Cab along with $200 for the amp. It has been played a total of 10 hours it's whole life, looks and sounds amazing. Anyways, my question is this; Do I have some type of rare amp? The reason I ask this is because I have spent days trying to find a picture of it on the internet, I can't even find anyone talking about it, all I can find is info on the Silver Jubilee. This is starting to boggle my mind... you'd think an amp this amazing, you would be able to find something about it on the internet.

I hope all is well, thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out with this!

- Adam

** EDIT **

I forgot to mention that all of the knobs on the amp go to 11. The 11's slightly look like they were put on after the amp was purchased because they feel different to the touch then the rest of the text on the amp. I just thought it was pretty bad ass to have an amp that goes to 11 =)

Don't know much about it, but from all the talk I see going on about it, the Jubilee is the holy grail of hi-gain Marshall. They made a combo version? You are one lucky dog to have been able to acquire it for a cab and two big ones!

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

I'll tell ya what I know...The Silver Jublies came out in 1987 to commemarate the 25th annaversery of Marshall amps. They had silver tolex and chrome face plates, and were based on the 2203 and 2204 master volume heads. All SJ amps have a pentode/triode switch which knocks the power from 100 to 50 or from 50 to 25.The preamps had 3 gain modes, 2 of which were footswitchable. The amp also has a Rhythm Clip that is a push/pull on one of the pots...this is a diode clipper, and makes the tone even more distorted. The SJ amps werew only around in 1987, Marshall continued to make some of the SJ amps for a while longer w/o the silver tolex and chrome face...these amps were sold as the JCM 800 Custom line, they kept the same model numbers as the SJ amps. ALL of the JCM 800 Custom amps were discontinued by 1989, just before the JCM 800 was replaced completly by the JCM 900.

The model numbers are as follows...this applies to all the Silver Jublie as well as the JCM 800 Custom series

2550- 50 WATT HEAD
2551A-4x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 70'S OR G12 75'S (TOP CAB)
2551AV-4x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 30'S (TOP CAB)
2551B-4x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 70'S OR G12 75'S (BOTTOM CAB)
2551BV-4x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 30'S (BOTTOM CAB)
2553-50 WATT HEAD, SAME AS 2550 BUT IN A SMALL BOX
2554-1x12 COMBO OF THE 2550 HEAD
2555-100 WATT HEAD
2556A-2x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 70'S OR G12 75'S MADE AS A MATCH FOR THE 2553
2556AV-2x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 30'S MADE AS A MATCH FOR THE 2553
2556B-2x12 CAB CAME WITH G12 70'S OR G12 75'S MADE AS A MATCH FOR THE 2553
2556BV-2x12 CAB MADE WITH G12 30'S MADE AS A MATCH FOR THE 2553
2558-50 WATT 2x12 COMBO OF THE 2550 HEAD

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

Oh yea!

2550- made from 87-89
2551A-made from 87-88
2551AV-made from 87-88
2551B-made from 87-88
2551BV-made from 87-88
2553-made from 87-88
2554-made from 87-89
2556A-made from 87-88
2556AV-made from 87-88
2556B-made from 87-88
2556BV-made form 87-88
2558-made form 87-89

so to answer you main question, you amp as made from 1987-1989, from 87-88 is was silver with a chrome face, from 88-89 it was black with a gold face. ALL of the jublie amps are kinda hard to come by, the 100 watts heads are the most common followed by the 50 watts heads then the 2x12 combos.

I hope this helps!

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

Well, The Jubilees are a Rare amp. The black ones were made in 1988 and the silvers were made in 1987. I would say that you got the better end of the bargain on your trade. I have seen the silver combos go for over $1000 on ebay and they are only going to keep going up in value. Wait a few years and the price will probally be through the ceiling!!!!

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

Aint that an AWESOME amp? I have the same thing in silver, I have never seen a black version...Ive seen the head but never the combo. You did good on your trade. Im guessing the 11 were added after someone watched Spinal Tap!

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

The good thing about the 88 black Jubilees is that you can easily match them to a cabinet, since silver cabs are increasingly rare. The 2558 combo you have is the same circuit as the 2553 and 2550 50W heads. I've got the 2550 50w Fullstack, which I'm keeping as a collectible in mint condition. I fire it up once in awhile and it sounds friggin great. I put JJ E-34L's biased to 38mA and Sovtek 12AX7LPS tubes in it, and use an Alesis Nanoverb in the FX loop, which I also use as a secondary mastervolume. If you buy pre tubes for it, get the GT12AX7C's M's or Sovtek LPS.

I'm afraid of keeping the Jubilee stacked with both cabs, living in earthquake territory, so I use the straight Jubilee cab under my Vox Valvetronix modeling head at home

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

Well they are getting more rare day by day, I saw a silver 2x12 one on a dutch site over here. Went for 975 euros, don't exactly know what that is in USD. Anyway the 1x12 version is a bit more common, but you hardly see the 2x12 anymore. I've never seen a black one, and I can't comment on whether it's more rare. I'd hold on to that amp if I were you, because it's likely to be selling like fresh coffee on an early morning by that time

Re: Question about the Marshall Jubilee

man, it sounds like one to give to the grandkids :laugh2:
