Question about the PG and pup's in general

maybe someone here can answer a question for me. I just got an EBMM axis..I LOVE it...but I'm not so sure about the pups. They're nice and warm with decent (not great) harmonics. Pretty full sounding. The highs and mids are pretty good but the lows are WAYYYY too loose. The low E string sounds way too rounded for my liking.

ANYWHO, I've been listening to the clips of the pups over and over again. I'm having a JB trembucker put in my lynch esp as we speak, so I'll better know how that sounds on or about wednesday. I'm really looking forward to getting that back.

What I don't get though is how good the pearly gates sounds! It's got a similar EQ curve to the JB or the demon (scooped..the way I like it), but it's lower on the output scale than either of those. ESPECIALLY when compared to the JB. Now, I got rid of the demon in my lynch for the JB cause of the output. I think a hotter pup will give me a more focussed attack.

When I listen to the PG clips, the tone sounds GREAT. Nice and warm, not too harsh but great harmonically rich distortion. I thought since it was lower in output than the JB that this wouldn't be the case? :smack:

Anywho, my axis is basswood with a maple neck. Anyone think that the PG would sound good in it? I play hard rock/metal.

Well I think the harmonics of the PG has more to do with the wiring than the output. It's just a crunchy, high-range focused pickup. I'm dying to try one (or two) myself.

I agree, I love the way it sounds on the CD. I wonder how a PG+ set would sound in my Les Paul...

Well... I palyed a PG in my mahogany LTD and I just loved it for rock through my marshall, really really nice. It isn't has scooped as other pick-ups, I find it less nasal (if you allow me) than the JB but still has nice harmonics... If you're looking for a pick-up with a tight bottom this might not be it... I like the way the bass sounded but that's my taste and ears... I now have a custom in my ltd and the bass is really tight, far from the JB that was there before and further than what you can hear from the PG. It's (the PG) a really nice pick-up, warm but with nice mids and highs... If you like to play with your tone knob a little it does wonders :smoker: I think it is all that you describe but lacks the tightness in the bass that you're looking for... maybe a custom could be a great choice, I put one in my ltd because lately I've been playing more hardcore stuff and it is quite a nice aggressive pick-up, altho a lot of people are affraid of ceramic mags... just my 0.02$

Someone correct me if I'm wrong,but part of the vibe behind the PG is the mismatched bobbins or it's "sizzle" and aggressive,crunchy mids...I'm not sure if this pickup in fact has mismatched coils,but it sure acts like it! The PG is a great pickup...It has the A2 magnet,is within the PAF specs,but has more midrange crunch and aggression...Also a pretty tight pickup for being an A2 magnet and this is the reason I feel the coils are mismatched..

The PGb has a lot of personality and life. It definitely has an outstanding character in the upper mids area.
The PGn is very warm and thick. It's a little too thick for my stuff, but I like to hear other people's music when using it.

Both of these pickups have character and life. It just depends on your style I guess.

hey, your avatar is a pic of the exact esp that I was looking into getting before I got my Axis =)

I had a duncan distortion in my lynch ESP and I didn't like it..that was ceramic mag..I like the alnico 5 mag sound, but the demon didn't have the output I was looking for..so I got the DD and hated it..lol..so that's why I went with a JB ....hopefully that'll be good for my lynch..although you say the bottom end on that isn't very tight...but I guess I'll see for myself in about two days

as far as my music man..I'm not sure what I'm going to do..first thing though is to lower the action and put new strings on it..the strings are either really crummy or they're really dead or both...after that I'll see what it sounds like..but I'm pretty convinced that I'm going to re pup the thing sooner or later..

I do hear alotta good things about the Custom from players with alot of different styles..

this has gotta be one of the hardest things to do..finding a pup yer happy with...I t hought the distortion sounded good on the CD as well..HATED it in my guitar..which is why I'm gettin' a JB in it as we speak..ugh..

A '59 is a great complement for a custom if you ever go that road... I use it mostly for cleans altho the custom still isn't bad in its own right for cleans but overdrives like a champion... they blend wonderfully too

the diff in output isn't that bad, volume wise? I listened to the clip...it definetly sounds crisp..how's the 59 distorted in the neck position?
