Question about the rails pickups

I've noticed that the rails on the pickups are black, but I've seen some on google that have silver rails, are they just painted or are they black through and through? If they're painted how difficult is it to get them to be silver?

The black ones are usually ceramic, not sure if it's paint but it would not make them chrome to polish them.

The shiny rails are stainless steel or other shiny metal. The black ones are black all the way through. You can't really change one to the other.
