Question About Using Caps to Change Pot Values

There's a little wiring trick I'd like to try out that I've seen recommended here before, but for the life of me I can't remember the details.

I want to put a '59 in the neck of my Tele. I'd like to use a 500k volume pot with it, but my bridge pickup sounds outstanding with the existing 250k, so I don't want to change it.

So, let me see if I can get this...

If I change the volume pot to a 500k and then wire the correct resistor from the bridge lug on the switch to ground on the back of the pot, the bridge pickup will still act like it's attached to a 250k pot, right?

What value would the resistor need to be?

Any way I could get a similar result without changing the 250k pot at all?

Cheers fellas. :beerchug:

Re: Question About Using Caps to Change Pot Values

Nice article, man. That's a cool idea.

I'd prefer something that does this automatically, though. Teles don't have the biggest control routes and I already have an extra mini-switch crammed in there. Plus I'd rather not complicate things by having to throw two switches every time I want to select the other pickup.

Thanks for the idea, though. :)

On a two pickup guitar, one disadvantage of the automatic, self-selecting lower resistance mode would be that it might adversely affect one or other of the pickups in the middle position.
