Question about wiring on 4 conductor Dimarzio Humbuckers

So I got this new Ibanez guitar recently and I was just poking around checking things out, it came stock with a pair of Dimarzios, and I was just curious about the way one of the pickups is wired up.

I know that standard wiring in Series (http://imgur.com/BxooO79) for these things goes:
  • Red is hot/output.
  • Green and bare wires go to ground.
  • Black and white get soldered off together.
And that's exactly what my bridge pickup is wired as.

But the neck pickup is wired:
  • White is hot.
  • Black and bare to ground.
  • Green and red are soldered off together.
Just curious what the wiring on the neck pickup is. I'm no expert at this, so the only other wiring method I know is Parallel, and that isn't Parallel. There's nothing fancy going on inside the guitar, just a volume and a three way selector. No taps, splits, or even a tone knob. Is it still Series, but just... in reverse? I don't know what I'm talking about. :boggled:

Re: Question about wiring on 4 conductor Dimarzio Humbuckers

Is this a factory new or previously owned new? If previously owned the wiring was most likely modded for some reason and possibly a different brand replacement pup in the neck. If factory, that's just weird.
When both pups are engaged, do they sound normal and full? Or do they sound thin with a low output (kinda like the rhythm guitar track at the beginning of Wish You Were Here)? If they sound normal, that neck pup has likely been replaced (if used) or a messed up lot from DiMarzio's contractor or not what was advertised (if new). If they sound thin with low output they're just out of phase.
That's my opinion.

Nothing weird about it!

The pickups are wired so that the inner coils can run together without hum.

If you check with a compass, you'll notice that the inner coils are opposite polarity; and the pickup with the inner coil that's south was rotated 180 degrees.

+1 to that. Nothing to worry about, that's the standard Ibanez wiring for HH-guitars! :fing2:
I like the sound it provides.

Ah, yeah. That makes sense. Thanks guys! Yeah I wasn't worried anything was wrong, the guitar sounds fine. I was just curious since I wasn't familiar with the wiring.
