Question about wiring pots (both volume and tone)

Is there a difference between the tab in the middle versus the two tabs on the end of the pot regarding their function? Can an end or middle be used for either hooking up the pup or grounding?

Yes. The middle terminal is called the wiper and is usually the output of the pot.

The terminals on either side are the opposite ends of the resistor that the middle terminal wipes against (like the hand of a clock) when you turn the knob.

Got an old pot that's broken? Open it up and check it out inside.
