question for peavey classic owners

Hi all. I have the chance to buy a peavey classic 50 head at a very good price, but have to decide fairly soon and wont be able to try it. I own a marshall 2x12 cab (with celestions) that it would be paired with it if i bought it.

My question is about the distortion on it. I have tried reading up on the amp, and some people say its really more blues than rock.
I am not into thrash metal, but play rock stuff with gain levels equivalent to bands like like soundgarden/ smashing pumpkins / stone temple pilots
Does the peavey classic have enough gain for this sort of stuff? I dont really like using distortion pedals.
thanks
zak

Re: question for peavey classic owners

i had one... it will do that classic rock thing really well. it can do sound garden and stp with the right set of tubes. for smashing pumpkins you will need some type of fuzz pedal.

i could pull pretty good rage against the machine sound from it. a overdrive will help if you need more gain. but all and all it is a very nice amp.

He's right. Not quite pumpins, but a simple SD-1 for $35 or so and you can get there, or an EQ in the loop is good too. I'm really happy with mine and if you are getting a good deal, go for it.

That head came with two different power sections. 2 6L6's or 4 EL-84's.
If it has the EL-84's, the gain will be more Brian May'ish. If it has the 6L6's, it'll sound like a 5150 with a bit less gain. If you want a Marshall type heaviness, you should dial the gain moderately, then add an OD pedal. The Peavey Classic 50 heads are good amps, tho, especially if you put in JJ power tubes and highend preamp tubes.

Re: question for peavey classic owners

what joneser said, they are great amps, best value for the dollar, the 50's have a ton of power, great clean tone and work fine for moderate rock levels - want more grind add your favorite flavor of overdrive, they love pedals.
